Horror Stories

00:05 Hello everyone and welcome back to Horror Stories. I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep, so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. 00:17 Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. 00:26 Story one. 00:28 I have to tell somebody what happened with the neighbor living beneath us. 00:32 Because the police refuse to do anything about it, and I feel like I'm coming apart. We were an ordinary family. There was me, my wife, Jenna, and our two children, who were seven and four when all of this happened. 00:46 I worked the overnight shift at a warehouse distribution center in Cincinnati, and Jenna stayed home to look after the kids. 00:53 Our place was on the second floor of an aging brick apartment building built back in the 60s. It was one of those eight unit buildings with wooden floors that creaked under your feet and windows that shook in their frames whenever a truck went rumbling down the street. 01:07 We'd been living there for roughly three years, and nothing particularly serious had ever gone wrong. 01:13 There were the usual repairs that needed doing, and the walls were thin enough that you heard more of your neighbors' lives than you really wanted to. 01:21 But that was about it. 01:22 Most of the people in the building were pleasant enough. They were the sort of neighbors you'd make small talk with about the weather while collecting your mail. 01:30 The man living directly underneath our apartment was different. Mr. Garrett mostly avoided everyone. He was a heavyset man somewhere in his late fifties, with sparse gray hair and a strange habit of putting on the exact same washed out blue coveralls every day. 01:46 He always looked as though he'd just finished a shift at a factory that had gone out of business twenty years earlier. 01:52 At first, the strange things were minor. They were the kind of little irregularities you could explain away if you didn't stop to think too hard about them. 02:01 One Saturday afternoon, we returned from buying groceries and discovered that our front door wasn't locked. Jenna was certain she'd locked it before we left. 02:10 I believed her. 02:12 She was the kind of person who would test the doorknob twice before feeling comfortable walking away. 02:17 Still we let it go. 02:19 We told ourselves that maybe one of us had become distracted while the kids were squabbling over whose turn it was to push the shopping cart or something like that. 02:28 The following week we found the door unlocked again. 02:31 Only this time the kitchen window was open a couple of inches too. 02:35 That window overlooked the dumpsters. We never opened it and we certainly wouldn't have left it open during early spring when the air outside was still cold. 02:45 The coffee maker had also been moved. Instead of sitting beside the toaster where it belonged it was on the counter across the kitchen. 02:53 Even the children's drawings on the refrigerator seemed rearranged. 02:57 It looked as though somebody had removed them and then stuck them back up in different places. 03:02 None of those things amounted to some enormous violation on its own. But Jenna and I shared one of those looks married people give each other when they both understand that something doesn't make sense. 03:13 We began keeping a notebook and recording every odd thing we noticed. The bathroom tap would be dripping when we came home, even though we always checked that it was shut off all the way. 03:24 Our bedroom closet would be standing wide open. 03:27 We normally kept that door closed because the kids liked hiding in there during hide and seek and leaving our clothes in a mess. 03:34 Then there was the smell. That was the part that bothered me most. 03:38 It would turn up unexpectedly. A mixture of cheap cigar smoke and some sort of cleaner that smelled like it belonged in an industrial building. 03:47 It lingered in different parts of the apartment, but it was always strongest around the heating vents. 03:53 One day, Jenna noticed that her grandmother's jewelry box had been turned around on our dresser so that its front was facing the wall. 04:00 Nothing had been taken, but somebody had clearly gone through it because her rings were no longer in the compartment where she kept them. 04:08 I put a chain lock on the front door, the kind you see in hotel rooms, and convinced myself that would put an end to it. 04:15 We also began changing our habits. We'd come back at different hours, trying to make our movements less predictable for anyone who might have been keeping track of when we left and returned. 04:26 About three weeks after this whole nightmare began, I decided to leave work before the end of my shift. 04:32 I told my supervisor I wasn't feeling well. Considering how badly the stress was wearing me down, that wasn't much of a lie. 04:40 Instead of leaving the car in our normal parking space, I parked around the corner. 04:45 Then I entered through the rear stairwell and made my way upstairs as quietly as I could. 04:50 When I reached our floor I could hear somebody walking around inside our apartment. 04:55 The footsteps were unhurried and deliberate, as though whoever was in there had all the time in the world. 05:01 I already had my key in my hand when I heard our front door click closed. 05:05 I hurried around the corner and caught sight of Mr. Garrett's door shutting on the level below us. That familiar odor of chemicals and cigars was still lingering in the hallway. 05:15 For a solid minute, I stood there trying to understand what had just happened. 05:20 My heart was beating so hard that I could hear the pounding inside my ears. 05:25 When I finally entered our apartment, I found our mail laid out across the kitchen table. 05:30 It had been separated into tidy little stacks. 05:33 Every cupboard door in the kitchen was open. 05:36 I called Jenna right away and told her to stay at her mother's with the children that night. 05:41 Then I went directly downstairs and hammered on Mr. Garrett's door until my knuckles hurt. 05:46 His television was playing inside. 05:49 I could hear some game show, complete with that recorded laughter, and I knew perfectly well that he was home. 05:56 It took about five minutes before he finally answered. Even then, he only opened the door as far as the security chain would let him. His face appeared in the narrow opening. His skin was damp with sweat and covered in blotchy patches, and his pale, watery blue eyes kept avoiding mine. 06:13 He had those same coveralls on. 06:15 Standing that close to his doorway, I could smell the exact mixture we'd been noticing upstairs. 06:21 Old cigar smoke and chemical cleaning fluid drifting out of his apartment. 06:25 I asked him directly whether he had been inside our home. He looked at me without any expression at all, as if he couldn't understand the language I was speaking. 06:34 Then slowly and carefully he said he had no idea what I meant. He claimed he'd spent the entire day at home watching his television programs. 06:43 Before I had the chance to respond he closed the door right in my face. I heard lock after lock being fastened on the other side. There were far more of them than any ordinary person would have needed. 06:55 I hardly slept that night. I stayed in the living room with a baseball bat resting across my knees, paying attention to every creak and strained groan the old building made. 07:05 At around 3 in the morning, footsteps sounded out in the corridor. They were slow and evenly spaced. 07:12 They stopped directly outside our apartment. 07:15 Whoever was there remained in that spot for what had to be 10 minutes. There was no movement, no attempt to turn the door knob. They were simply standing outside our door. 07:25 I eased over to the peephole and looked through it. 07:28 I couldn't see anybody. 07:30 Whoever it was had positioned themselves just beyond the area the peephole showed. Then I heard them breathing. It was loud and rough coming from right against the door. The chain lock gave a faint rattle as though someone on the other side was checking it. 07:45 I reached for my phone so I could get a recording. But the moment the camera opened and made that small clicking noise, the footsteps moved off in a hurry. 07:54 Eventually, I gathered enough courage to open the door a little and look into the hallway. 07:59 Nobody was there. The only thing left behind was a damp rag lying on our doormat. It had been drenched in something that made the inside of my nose burn when I leaned close enough to smell it. 08:10 The next morning, Jenna and I went straight to the landlord's office. Mr. Thompson was a thin man in his 70s who always wore suspenders and carried the smell of mothballs around with him. 08:21 He listened while we described what had been happening, repeatedly tapping his pen against the surface of his desk. 08:28 Then he told us that Mr. Garrett had lived in the building for 15 years. 08:32 He'd always paid his rent on time and had never given him any trouble. 08:36 When we insisted that someone had been coming into our apartment, Thompson merely lifted his shoulders. He said we couldn't prove Garrett was responsible. 08:45 Maybe with the children and everything else going on, we were just forgetting things. 08:50 He refused to replace our locks unless we paid for it ourselves. 08:54 And he made it clear that he wasn't about to challenge a tenant who had been there that long over accusations we couldn't substantiate. 09:02 As we were walking out, he casually added something that made my skin crawl. 09:06 Years earlier, before Thompson began using an outside maintenance company, Garrett had been the building's maintenance man. He still had a master key from that time. 09:16 Garrett had said he'd lost it, but Thompson had never bothered to have the locks replaced. After all, Garrett was such a dependable tenant. 09:25 We contacted the police that afternoon. 09:28 Two officers arrived roughly three hours later, and both of them looked uninterested before we'd even begun explaining what was wrong. 09:36 They wrote things down while we went through everything, but once it became clear that we couldn't point to anything missing or damaged, I could see the doubt written across their faces. 09:46 The younger officer looked like he'd only just graduated from the academy. His uniform was pressed so neatly it barely seemed worn. He actually suggested that the two of us might be suffering from shared delusions brought on by stress. 10:00 The older officer at least agreed to go downstairs and speak with Garrett. 10:04 Five minutes later he returned and said that Garrett denied all of it and appeared bewildered by what we were accusing him of. 10:11 They handed us a case number and said to call again if anything else occurred. But they also made sure we understood that without signs of a forced entry or belongings being stolen, there wasn't a whole lot they could do. 10:25 While they were leaving, I spotted Garrett at the foot of the stairs. He was standing there watching us. There was a pleased expression on his face, as though he'd known from the beginning exactly how that visit was going to end. 10:38 After the officers came, everything got worse almost immediately. 10:42 The following day, all four tires on our car had been emptied of air. 10:47 They hadn't been cut. 10:49 Somebody had simply let the air out, which meant it technically wasn't vandalism. 10:54 While I was pumping them back up at the gas station, I discovered that sugar had been dumped into the fuel tank. 11:00 The mechanic told us we were fortunate we hadn't tried starting the car. 11:04 That evening, Garrett began inviting people over. 11:07 In the entire three years we'd lived above him, we had never seen him do that before. And these weren't the kind of visitors you'd expect someone to have around for a quiet evening. They were rough-looking men with tattoos on their necks and motorcycles. They would leave their bikes directly behind our car so we couldn't get out. 11:25 Then they'd gather on the front steps drinking and speaking loudly until two or three in the morning. 11:31 Whenever we pulled the curtains aside to look, they were always glancing toward our windows. 11:36 One morning, Jenna found a dead pigeon outside our door. Its neck had been twisted all the way around. 11:42 The children started asking questions we didn't know how to answer. 11:46 Why weren't they allowed to go outside and play anymore? Why did mommy keep crying? Why did everyone have to stay so quiet all the time? 11:55 Then we began discovering rags soaked in that chemical liquid stuffed into the bathroom vent. 12:01 Someone was putting them there while we slept. 12:04 The fumes spread through the apartment and left us feeling lightheaded and sick to our stomachs. 12:09 I went down to confront Garrett a second time. On this occasion, I had my phone recording from inside my pocket. He opened the door right away, almost as if he'd been expecting me. He didn't even use the chain this time. He stood in the doorway wearing those dirty coveralls, smiling through teeth-stained brown by tobacco. 12:29 In a perfectly calm voice, he told me he'd lived in that building longer than anybody else. He knew every pipe, every wire, every entrance and every exit. 12:39 Then he said that sometimes when people were living somewhere they didn't belong, Accidents started happening. 12:46 A fire in the kitchen, a gas leak, things like that. 12:51 He moved closer until I could smell the foulness of his breath. 12:54 Then he lowered his voice and said, my children certainly were pretty. 12:58 It would be a terrible shame, he whispered, if something happened while I was away at work and Jenna was there alone with them. 13:05 He knew the hours we kept. He knew when I headed out for my overnight shifts. 13:10 He knew which school our children attended and which playground we took them to. 13:14 He had spent years observing us, gathering little pieces of information, waiting for something he could take as an offense and use as his excuse. 13:23 We called the police again and let them listen to the recording I'd made with the phone in my pocket. but the sound was muffled. A lot of what he'd said was difficult to hear clearly. 13:33 They told us it wasn't sufficient to obtain a restraining order. His remarks, they said, could be understood in more than one way. We needed clearer, more solid proof that he was threatening or harassing us. 13:45 One of the officers even recommended that we think about moving if we didn't feel safe. 13:50 He said it as though leaving were as easy as putting our things in boxes and walking out, when we could scarcely come up with enough money for the deposit on another apartment. 14:00 That night, while we were inside our home, somebody filled our door lock with super glue. 14:05 We were stuck in the apartment until I managed to get the superintendent to drill the lock out. 14:11 The next morning, one of Garrett's biker friends began following Jenna as she drove the kids to school. 14:16 He kept enough distance between his vehicle and hers that nobody could accuse him of tailgating. We would notice them at the supermarket, at the park. Wherever we went, they seemed to be there, looking at us. They always stopped just short of doing something unlawful enough to make the police take an interest. 14:34 Meanwhile, the chemical odor inside our apartment kept intensifying. It seeped in through vents we hadn't even known were there. Both children developed lingering coughs and neither of them could seem to shake it. 14:47 What finally pushed us past the edge happened on a Friday night. I was at work when Jenna called. She was hysterical. She told me she'd awakened and found Garrett standing in the doorway of our bedroom. 14:58 The light from the hallway outlined his body. He was just standing there, watching her sleep. 15:04 When she screamed, he turned and left with complete composure. He didn't run. He didn't rush. He simply walked out at an easy pace. as though being inside our apartment was the most natural thing in the world. 15:18 The police came back. This time they discovered that the lock on our front door had been picked. 15:24 At last they had the evidence of breaking and entering they'd been waiting for. 15:28 They arrested Garrett that night. By the following morning he had posted bail and was out again. We loaded whatever belongings would fit into our car and left that very day. For two months we stayed with Jenna's mother while we looked for somewhere else to live. 15:43 Eventually we found an apartment three towns away. We had to break our lease at the old place and give up our security deposit. 15:51 We borrowed money so we could afford the new apartment. 15:54 Our landlord actually had the nerve to threaten legal action against us for abandoning the property. 16:00 We never returned to collect the things we'd left behind. 16:04 Every so often I'd drive past that old apartment building. And I swear I can still make him out at his window, still wearing those same coveralls, still waiting for another family to move into the apartment above him. 16:16 The police eventually told us that the case had been dismissed for lack of sufficient evidence because we wouldn't come back to testify. 16:24 We wanted the whole thing to be finished. We wanted our children to be able to sleep until morning again without asking whether the bad man was going to come back. 16:37 Story 2. 16:39 I moved into the rented room on Willow Avenue in early October. It was just outside Portland, and I'd recently gotten a job downtown with a medical billing company. 16:49 After spending weeks looking for somewhere I could afford, I finally came across a reasonably priced room in a quiet suburban home belonging to an older couple, the Johnsons. 16:59 They occupied the main floor and I rented a comfortable room upstairs. It had a separate entrance that I could reach using the stairs at the back of the house. 17:08 At first, the neighborhood looked like exactly what I'd been hoping to find. Trees lined the streets, children rode their bicycles up and down the sidewalks, and people took their dogs out for walks in the evenings. 17:21 After four years in a loud apartment complex close to campus, I remember thinking how fortunate I was to have landed somewhere so calm. 17:30 The Johnsons were kind people. They regularly asked whether I needed anything, and their enormous orange tabby, Clementine, occasionally slipped upstairs into my room. 17:41 On Fridays, when I worked from home, she would climb onto my bed and curl up there while I worked. 17:46 Nothing much happened during those first few weeks. Life was almost dull, but in that reassuring way a peaceful neighborhood can be. 17:54 I got up at 6.30, brewed coffee in the little kitchenette and left for work. 17:59 In the evenings I either went running through the neighborhood or sat with a book on the small balcony connected to my room. 18:06 It was on one of those evening runs about three weeks after I moved in that I really paid attention to the house beside ours. 18:13 Paint was flaking away from the siding. The lawn had grown wild and dandelions had spread through the areas that had apparently once been flower beds. 18:22 There always seemed to be a different vehicle in the driveway. usually a battered sedan that stayed for a day or two before disappearing again. 18:30 The mailbox was so crammed with letters that some of the envelopes had spilled out onto the ground. But none of that held my attention the way the woman on the front steps did. 18:40 She was smoking and watching me directly as I ran past. 18:44 Her blonde hair hung in thin, tangled strands that looked as though they hadn't seen shampoo in weeks. 18:50 Even though the evening was warm, she had an oversized flannel shirt on. 18:54 There was something empty and desperate in her eyes that made me run a little faster. 18:59 Several days later I was unloading grocery bags from my car when she came up to the fence between the two properties. 19:05 Hey neighbor, she shouted. 19:08 Her voice was rough and louder than it needed to be. 19:11 I'm Diane. I've been here eight years. Haven't seen you around before. 19:17 She had her fingers wrapped tightly around the chain-link fence, gripping it hard enough that her knuckles had gone white. 19:24 Her fingernails were chewed down painfully close to the skin and dried blood marked their edges. 19:30 I gave her my name and tried to be polite, shifting the grocery bags in my arms while keeping some space between us. 19:37 almost immediately she began talking at a frantic pace her ex-husband had left her with absolutely nothing the government was cheating her out of the disability payments she deserved her daughter no longer bothered to come and see her one complaint followed another so quickly that there was hardly a pause between them The words poured out like water forcing its way through a broken dam. 20:00 As she talked, she kept edging closer to the fence. 20:03 Despite the several feet separating us, I could detect a sour smell on her breath. 20:08 Then, without so much as changing her tone, she asked whether I could loan her $40 to buy food. 20:14 She promised to give it back on Friday when her check arrived. Before I could answer, Mr. Johnson stepped onto the rear porch and called over to say he needed a hand moving something indoors. 20:25 I don't think I'd ever been so relieved to have somebody interrupt a conversation. 20:30 I told Diane I was sorry but had to go, then practically hurried at a run toward the house. When I reached the porch, Mr. Johnson drew me aside. 20:39 The cheerful expression he normally wore had disappeared. 20:43 You ought to watch yourself around her, he said softly, looking toward the fence, where Diane was still standing and staring at us. 20:50 She's been causing problems for years. 20:53 He told me that the previous month she'd borrowed a car from Peggy, who lived across the street. 20:59 Diane had claimed she only needed it for a quick trip to get groceries. She didn't return it for three days. 21:06 Peggy eventually located it sitting abandoned at a gas station 20 miles away. The fuel tank was empty, and fast food packaging was scattered all through the car. 21:16 According to Mr. Johnson, Diane tended to follow the same routine with people. She would start out acting friendly and learn everything she could about them. Then she'd begin asking for favors. 21:27 At first, the requests would be small. 21:29 After that, they would get bigger. 21:32 And if someone told her no, she could become vicious. 21:35 The person who'd rented my room before me was a college student named Brandon. 21:40 He had left after only two months because Diane kept showing up at his door at every imaginable hour, insisting that he drive her somewhere or let her use his phone. 21:49 For the next couple of weeks, I did my best to keep any real contact with her to a minimum. 21:54 Sometimes, from my window, I would spot her marching back and forth across her backyard while shouting into her phone. 22:01 She would make these huge frantic gestures, even though nobody was standing there with her. 22:06 At other times, she would be on the porch with an assortment of people. There were hard-looking men with tattoos running up their necks, and women who appeared every bit as strung out as Diane herself. 22:17 Arguments broke out regularly. Their voices traveled through the thin walls separating the spaces inside our neighboring houses. 22:25 I began keeping headphones on almost all the time. Half the time nothing was playing through them. 22:31 I just wanted a reason to pretend I hadn't heard her if she tried starting another conversation. 22:36 Diane wasn't easily discouraged though. Whenever I returned from work, she seemed to materialize at the fence with another emergency. 22:45 The power company was about to disconnect her electricity. Somebody had taken her medication. She needed someone to drive her to the pharmacy. 22:54 Every time I came up with some excuse, I was running late. I had to take a call for work. I wasn't feeling good. 23:02 With each refusal, I could see her becoming a little more irritated. 23:06 The friendly act was beginning to slip. 23:09 Then, on a Wednesday evening in mid-November, things finally boiled over. 23:14 I'd had an especially difficult day at work, dealing with insurance claims and patients who were angry about them. 23:21 All I wanted was to warm up the pasta leftover in my fridge and watch Netflix without anyone bothering me. I was about halfway up the back staircase when I heard her behind me. 23:31 Hey, hold on. 23:33 Diane was at the bottom of my stairs. 23:35 She hadn't stayed on her side of the fence this time. She had opened the gate and come straight into our backyard. She looked even more disheveled than normal. 23:44 Her hair was oily and clumped together. and she was wearing the same dirty sweatpants I'd seen on her for three days in a row. 23:52 Her pupils were tiny, almost like pinpricks. She kept dragging her nails over her arms, making red streaks across her pale skin. 24:01 I really need you to help me, she said, already climbing the stairs in my direction. 24:06 Only tonight, I swear. My cousin threw me out, and I need a place to lie down for a few hours until my friend finishes work. 24:16 She sounded desperate, but there was something aggressive underneath it. It made my heartbeat speed up. 24:22 I told her clearly that I couldn't give her somewhere to stay and that she needed to get off our property. 24:27 She continued coming up the stairs. Now she was speaking even more quickly, telling me she knew I had room to spare and that neighbors were meant to look out for one another. 24:37 I got through my doorway and locked it just as she reached the top landing. She immediately began beating on the door. This wasn't an ordinary knock. She was slamming her fists against it with everything she had. 24:49 I know you're in there. Let me in. I only need some help. 24:53 The entire door rattled every time she struck it. 24:57 Through the closed door I told her she had to leave, otherwise I would call the police. 25:02 That was when she completely came apart. She started kicking instead of pounding, and her raised voice turned into outright screaming. 25:10 Some of the sounds barely resembled words. They were raw, furious cries broken up by swearing and accusations. 25:17 She hurled every insult she could think of at me. 25:21 She shouted that I was no different from everybody else, that I was going to be sorry for this. 25:26 Somewhere downstairs, I could hear Mr. Johnson yelling at her to leave his property. She paid no attention to him. 25:33 I picked up my phone and dialed 911, doing everything I could to keep my voice steady while describing what was happening to the dispatcher. 25:41 From my bedroom window I could see that she had found what appeared to be a garden rake. Now she was using it against my door. The metal teeth scraped across the wood as she attacked it. 25:52 The dispatcher assured me that officers were coming, but every minute of waiting seemed to stretch on forever. 25:58 At last sirens sounded in the distance. 26:01 The blows against my door stopped. 26:04 I looked out between the blinds and saw Diane hurrying back toward her own house. 26:09 She threw the rake into our yard as she went. 26:12 Two patrol cars arrived. 26:14 I made my way downstairs to speak with the officers, still trembling from the rush of adrenaline. 26:20 After taking my account of what had happened, they walked next door to talk to Diane. I could hear her through the walls. She was crying and making herself sound like the victim, telling them she had only wanted someone to help her and that I'd blown the whole thing out of proportion. 26:36 But this clearly wasn't the first time those officers had dealt with her. 26:40 Their worn-out expressions when they returned told me that much. They said they had warned her that she was trespassing and instructed her to keep away from our property. 26:49 One of them was a younger man with gentle eyes. He advised me to seek a restraining order if she came back and bothered me again. 26:57 Once they were gone, I couldn't bring myself to eat. I couldn't pay attention to a show or anything else. 27:03 I stayed on my bed, listening to every noise from the house next door and wondering whether she would return. 27:09 Around midnight, her place finally fell silent. Even then, I hardly got any sleep. Every creaking sound and every rustle outside made me flinch. 27:19 The following morning began with a stillness that felt almost unnatural. 27:23 I had finally drifted off sometime around four, then woke at seven to the sound of birds and sunlight slipping through my blinds. 27:31 For a few seconds, I nearly persuaded myself that the previous night had settled everything. 27:37 Maybe Diane had understood the warning. 27:39 Maybe she would leave me alone now. 27:42 My hands shook as I made coffee. I was worn out, but I still had to get myself ready for work. 27:48 Looking out through the kitchen window I could see that her house was dark and motionless. 27:53 Nothing stirred behind the ragged curtains. 27:56 I was collecting my things for work when the screaming started. It came from next door again, but it didn't sound the same as the shouting the night before. This was rage without anything holding it back. I heard furniture being knocked over, glass shattering. 28:12 Then a man shouted in a low frightened voice. 28:15 Stop. Put that down. Diane, stop. 28:18 There was another loud crash. Then a woman screamed. It wasn't Diane. The voice sounded younger. 28:26 I rushed to the window and saw a young woman, probably in her early 20s, stagger through Diane's front doorway. She was clutching one arm. 28:34 Blood was pushing out between her fingers and spreading across the white fabric of her shirt. She made it onto the front lawn and collapsed. 28:43 A man ran out immediately behind her. He was tall and heavyset, dressed in a mechanic's uniform, and his face had gone pale with shock. 28:52 I called 911 for the second time. My voice kept breaking as I tried to tell the dispatcher what I was looking at. By then, other people on the street were coming outside. 29:02 Peggy emerged from the house opposite us, still wearing her bathrobe. 29:06 The Guyanans came out from two houses down. Everyone was gathering, but nobody wanted to get too close. 29:13 The man dropped to his knees beside the young woman and held his jacket tightly against her injured arm. 29:19 He spoke to her quietly, but there was urgency in every word. 29:23 You're okay, Katie. They're coming to help. Stay with me. 29:28 Through the open doorway of Diane's house, I could see the wreckage inside. Furniture had been overturned. Pieces of what seemed to be a shattered mirror were strewn across the floor. 29:39 Then Diane stepped into the doorway. She had what looked like a kitchen knife in her hand. Her features were twisted with fury. The mascara she'd been wearing the night before had run down her face, leaving long black trails along her cheeks. 29:53 She screamed about being betrayed, about relatives who didn't care about her, about how everybody was against her. 30:01 The man got to his feet and placed himself between Diane and Katie. He held his hands up and begged her to set the knife down. 30:08 Diane stayed in the doorway, swinging it around as she continued shouting. She went on about money they were supposed to give her. Promises they hadn't kept. How Katie had stolen from her. 30:20 This time the sirens arrived quickly. 30:23 Several police vehicles came onto the street, followed by an ambulance and even a fire engine. 30:29 Red and blue flashes lit up the entire block. They bounced off the windows of the houses and threw odd shifting shadows across everything. 30:37 Officers took positions around Diane's home with their weapons drawn. They shouted for her to drop the knife. Instead, she backed into the house and slammed the door closed. 30:48 For several strained minutes, nobody knew how it was going to end. The paramedics hurried over to Katie and lifted her onto a stretcher. 30:56 The man gave them what information he could about the attack. 30:59 I found out afterward that he was Kevin, Diane's brother. He kept blaming himself. 31:05 He said he never should have brought Katie over there. 31:07 He'd only wanted to see how his sister was doing after the landlord told him about the trouble the previous evening. 31:14 The officers tried speaking to Diane through a megaphone, urging her to leave the house. 31:19 She screamed back from somewhere inside. By then, what she was saying barely made sense. 31:24 We could hear objects hitting the windows as she threw things around. Eventually, after a stretch of time that seemed endless but was probably about 20 minutes, she came outside. 31:35 The knife was gone. Her hands were in the air. 31:39 But she was still shouting and she spat at the officers while they put the handcuffs on her. 31:44 She had no shoes on. 31:46 Her feet were bleeding, most likely because she'd stepped on the broken mirror inside. 31:51 As they escorted her to the patrol car, she left red footprints across the concrete. 31:56 Everything that followed felt unreal. 31:59 Yellow police tape closed off the whole street. 32:02 Detectives went in and out of Diane's house, photographing the scene and coming back outside with bags of evidence. 32:09 I repeated my statement to three separate officers. 32:12 I told each of them about what I'd witnessed that morning and what had happened at my door the night before. 32:17 Peggy explained what Diane had done with her car. Then she started telling them about all the noise complaints people had made over the years. 32:25 It seemed like every neighbor had something to say about Diane. 32:29 Kevin remained sitting on the curb for hours. 32:32 Most of the time his head was bowed into his hands. 32:35 Every so often he would look up to answer another question from one of the detectives. 32:40 I overheard him telling an officer that Diane had been battling a meth problem for years. 32:45 The family had tried everything they could think of. Interventions, rehabilitation, whatever might give her a chance to get better, but she always returned to using. 32:57 Katie was his daughter, which made her Diane's niece. She had wanted to do something to help her aunt. 33:03 She'd even been lending Diane money, although Kevin had repeatedly warned her against it. 33:09 That morning, Diane had asked her for $500 to cover rent. 33:13 Katie finally refused. That was what led to the knife attack. By the afternoon, the street had settled down again. But the quiet didn't feel the same as it had before. We all knew one another in a way we hadn't before that morning. 33:28 Going through something like that together had connected us, even if it was a connection none of us would have chosen. 33:34 Diane's house was empty. Police tape sealed the door. It stood there as a reminder of how suddenly a situation could spin completely out of control. 33:44 Two weeks afterward I moved. 33:46 I found a studio downtown. 33:49 The rent was double what I'd been paying for the room, but the sense of safety made it feel worth far more than that. 33:55 Every now and then, that morning still comes back in my dreams. The blood spreading over Katie's white shirt, the broken glass scattered inside the house, and the sound of Diane's bare feet against the concrete as the officers walked her away. 34:15 Story 3 You don't forget the noise of metal scraping across frozen ground at 3 in the morning. During the winter of 2015, I was renting a little house on Birch Street in a small Michigan town. 34:28 It was the sort of place where the diner still served everything on a menu that hadn't changed since 1987, and people acted as though they weren't discussing their neighbors while picking up milk at the corner shop. 34:41 I'd come there after my divorce and started working overnight at the hospital as a radiology technician. 34:47 Because of those shifts, I was awake at strange times and often caught things that everyone else slept through. 34:53 Mr. Carlson lived two houses away from me. He was in his 60s, let his hedges grow without ever cutting them back, and had a mailbox perpetually stuffed with the newspapers that had begun turning yellow. 35:07 Years earlier, the rest of the street had stopped making any effort to get to know him. 35:12 If you tried speaking to him, he would simply fix those washed-out gray eyes on you. He never answered. He just kept looking until the silence became uncomfortable enough that you gave up and left. 35:24 The digging began immediately after November's first serious frost, when the earth should have been too hard for anyone to do much with it. 35:31 I returned from work at about 7 one morning and heard a repeated heavy chopping sound coming from the other side of Carlson's unruly hedges. 35:39 Chunk, chunk, chunk. 35:43 Through openings in the branches, I could make out him working with a shovel and a pickaxe. He was hacking his way through the frozen surface with a kind of determination that looked almost crazed. 35:54 Whatever he was making, they weren't ordinary planting beds. Every hole had carefully defined dimensions. Roughly six feet in length, three feet across, and at least four feet deep. 36:06 He would finish digging one to that depth before moving on to another. 36:10 In a single week the whole backyard had become a checkerboard of dugout rectangles. 36:15 Some were covered over again with newly disturbed soil. 36:18 Others remained wide open like injuries cut into the ground. 36:22 What made it even stranger was that he seemed to have no regular time for doing it. 36:27 I would hear the tools at midnight, then again at four in the afternoon. 36:32 Sometimes he was out there in the middle of a snowstorm when anyone with any sense would have been indoors in front of the television. 36:39 In early December, I asked a few people on the street what they thought about it. Mrs. Hoffman had lived there for 40 years. She knew the history of every family in the neighborhood, going back three generations. 36:52 When I brought up Carlson, she pressed her lips together and said he'd always been strange, especially since his wife disappeared around eight years earlier. 37:00 disappeared. She didn't say died. The explanation people had been given was that his wife had left him for an insurance salesman from Toledo. 37:09 But there was something in Mrs. Hoffman's voice when she repeated it that made me think she had never entirely accepted that version of events. 37:17 The Andersons, a young couple raising twin toddlers in the house immediately beside Carlson's, told me they had already called the police once. 37:25 The noise from his digging had been waking their children. 37:29 The officer who came out told them that working on your own yard at unusual hours wasn't against the law. 37:35 After that, they put a white noise machine in the twins' bedroom. They also bought blackout curtains. 37:41 Carlson had fitted a motion-activated light in his backyard, and without the curtains, it woke the children every time he went outside carrying his shovel. 37:50 By the middle of December, his behavior had become even harder to explain. 37:55 One evening at approximately six, I was walking my beagle Rufus past the house when I noticed Carlson pulling something toward one of the holes. 38:04 There were long, heavy bags. When he caught me looking, he claimed they contained fertilizer. But this was December in Michigan. 38:13 and those bags didn't look like any fertilizer packaging I'd ever seen. They were plain black plastic with no labels or markings, and each one was perhaps five feet long. 38:23 He dragged them over the frozen lawn, carving deep tracks through the frost. 38:28 Then he used an elaborate arrangement of pulleys he had put together to lower them into the excavations. 38:34 He handled them with extraordinary care, as though whatever was inside might break or somehow mattered too much to risk damaging. 38:42 When he noticed that I was still watching he didn't offer another explanation. 38:46 He simply stared at me for a long time with that vacant expression of his. 38:50 Rufus began whining and tugging at the leash trying to pull me away. 38:55 After that evening I changed the route we took on our walks. 38:58 It didn't stop me from hearing the shovel, though. At every possible hour, that metal on earth sound continued. It was like a mechanical heartbeat carrying through the entire neighborhood. 39:09 What finally pushed me to start keeping a record was the arrangement I noticed. I had worked overnight on Christmas Eve. By the time I got home on Christmas morning, I was exhausted and perfectly willing to spend the holiday asleep. 39:22 I went upstairs to my bedroom, where I could see part of Carlson's yard over the top of his hatch. 39:28 From that particular angle, with the winter sunlight falling just right, the layout suddenly became clear. 39:35 Snow blanketed almost everything except the places where he had disturbed the soil. For the first time I could see how the whole backyard was organized. Those holes hadn't been placed wherever he happened to feel like digging. They made an exact grid. Seven rows. Four holes in each row. 39:53 Twenty-eight rectangular excavations altogether. Some had been completely filled and marked with short wooden stakes. A few were only partly covered over. 40:03 Approximately six still stood empty. 40:06 Waiting. 40:07 I couldn't stop asking myself what they were waiting for. 40:10 I took out my phone and began photographing the yard, enlarging the view as far as the camera would allow. 40:17 That was when I spotted another detail. Every filled-in hole had a date cut into the wood of its marker. The dates reached back around three months, but there was no straightforward order to them. 40:29 November 3rd might sit beside December 15th, with November 27th right next to that. 40:36 It was as though Carlson was working from a calendar whose rules made sense only to him. 40:41 For the next several days, I kept turning those dates over in my mind. I began using a notebook, recording the times I heard him outside and trying to compare his activity with the dates on the stakes. 40:53 Then at about 11 on the night of December 28th, everything changed. 40:58 The familiar even rhythm of his digging disappeared. 41:02 Now the sounds were hurried and frantic. He seemed to be working against some deadline that only he knew about. 41:08 When I looked through my bedroom window, I could see the motion light switching on and off wildly as he hurried from one rectangle to another. 41:16 He wasn't opening any new holes. He was digging into the ones he had already filled. 41:22 Soil flew in every direction. There was a desperation in the way he moved that I had never seen before. 41:29 The following morning, he was back outside with a garden hose. It was around 20 degrees, but he was pouring water into every hole he had reopened. 41:38 All the while, he muttered to himself, I couldn't make out what he was saying. His clothing was coated in dirt. His gray hair stuck out in every direction. 41:48 His hands were bleeding where the hard frozen soil had ripped through his work gloves. 41:53 That was when I decided to contact the police myself. 41:57 I wasn't calling to complain about the noise or accuse him of disturbing the neighborhood. 42:01 Something about what was happening was seriously wrong. The dispatcher didn't sound especially interested at first. Then I mentioned his bleeding hands and the 28 holes laid out in a precise grid. 42:13 Her tone changed. She said she would have an officer come by to check on his welfare. 42:19 Roughly an hour later, I watched from my kitchen as one patrol car stopped outside Carlson's house. 42:24 The officer was young enough to look as though he had barely finished training. 42:28 He went up to the front door and knocked. Carlson came out, and they spoke on the porch for perhaps five minutes. 42:35 I could see Carlson making broad animated gestures and pointing toward the backyard. The officer kept nodding. 42:43 Then, to my utter disbelief, he walked back to his car and prepared to leave. 42:48 I went outside and caught him before he pulled away. 42:51 When I asked what was happening, he said Carlson had explained that he was putting in a complicated drainage system. 42:57 Apparently, he intended to build a greenhouse in the spring. He had even produced receipts for PVC piping and other materials. 43:05 As for the dates on the wooden markers... Those supposedly indicated when various parts of the project had to be finished, based on information in a farming almanac. 43:15 The officer looked at me as though my concern was the unreasonable part of the situation. 43:20 But later that night, when I heard Carlson talking on the phone, I knew there was more going on than he had admitted. 43:27 Despite the freezing weather, I had my bedroom window slightly open. 43:31 The radiator wasn't working properly and had made the room far too warm. 43:36 At around two in the morning, Carlson's voice traveled through the cold air from his backyard. 43:41 I couldn't hear the actual conversation clearly. What I could hear was how he sounded. He was begging somebody. 43:49 There was a shattered, desperate quality to his voice that I had never heard from him. 43:54 Then everything went quiet for a long stretch. 43:57 After that came a sound that seemed to be crying. 44:00 Eventually the shovel started again. This time the movement sounded slower, intentional. 44:07 From the window I could see that he was using a flashlight to work. The motion activated light had been switched off. 44:14 He went from hole to hole, closing each one with careful, systematic movements. He didn't stop before sunrise. By the time he had finished, the yard looked almost ordinary again. There were simply neat rectangles of freshly turned soil. They reminded me of cemetery plots still waiting for their gravestones. 44:32 For the next three days, nothing happened. There were no tools striking the ground, no lights coming on. No sign of anyone moving around inside Carlson's home. 44:42 The mail began accumulating again. 44:45 After a small snowfall on New Year's Eve, the snow in his driveway stayed untouched. 44:50 I wondered whether he had finally worn himself out, or perhaps spending so much time working in that cold had made him ill. 44:57 The Anderson said they hadn't seen him either. Even Mrs. Hoffman appeared worried, which wasn't something I was used to seeing from her. 45:05 She kept looking out from behind her curtains toward his house, holding her phone as though she couldn't decide whether to make a call. 45:12 On January 2nd, while I was preparing to leave for another night shift, I noticed a van in Carlson's driveway. 45:19 It was white and completely unmarked. There was no business name painted on it, and its windows were tinted. 45:26 Two men wearing dark coveralls were in the backyard. They carried equipment that resembled metal detectors, passing it slowly over each of the filled rectangles. They stayed out there for around an hour. Every so often one of them stopped and pushed a small orange flag into the ground. They were identifying particular places within that grid of disturbed dirt. 45:48 The sirens arrived that evening just as I was heading to work. This wasn't a matter of one or two officers coming to have another conversation. 45:56 Everything showed up. Several police vehicles, an ambulance, a crime scene van, even a truck from the coroner's office. 46:05 They closed the entire street. Yellow tape stretched everywhere, and uniformed officers entered and left Carlson's house carrying cameras and bags for evidence. 46:15 To get my own car out of my driveway I had to show them my hospital identification. 46:20 When I returned the next morning white tents covered the whole of Carlson's backyard. They were the sort you see on crime programs when investigators need to keep weather from interfering with the scene. 46:31 Along the street neighbors stood together in little clusters, speaking quietly and pointing. 46:37 All of a sudden everyone had a story about how they had always sensed there was something wrong with him. 46:42 Mrs. Hoffman told me Carlson had been discovered in his basement. She said he had suffered a heart attack, but she kept looking around anxiously while she said it. 46:52 From the way she behaved, I could tell she had heard something more, something uglier. 46:57 Over the following weeks, the actual story emerged a little at a time. 47:01 Most of what I learned came through a cousin who worked in dispatch and from the local paper after its reporters finally obtained the police report. 47:10 Carlson hadn't been burying bodies. He had been digging them up. 47:14 His wife had never gone anywhere with an insurance salesman. For eight years she had been beneath the concrete floor in his basement. 47:22 The previous fall cracks had begun appearing in the foundation. 47:26 That was what had frightened him. 47:28 He had been relocating her remains bit by bit, dividing them among all 28 holes. 47:34 Somehow he believed that if he spread everything out widely enough, nobody would be able to establish what had happened if anyone eventually dug up the basement. 47:43 The late night telephone conversation I had overheard was with his brother in Colorado. He was admitting everything. 47:50 He told his brother that he couldn't stand the guilt anymore. 47:54 His brother contacted the FBI. 47:57 The men I had seen with equipment that looked like metal detectors were federal agents. 48:01 They were using ground-penetrating radar to determine precisely where Carlson had placed the remains. 48:07 According to the medical examiner, Carlson had swallowed a quantity of sleeping tablets sufficient to kill three people. 48:14 He had taken them with antifreeze purchased from an auto parts shop. He probably did it shortly after he finished covering all those holes for the final time. 48:23 For two weeks, investigators dug through his backyard. They sifted every cubic inch of soil from each of the 28 rectangles. 48:31 I had to move into a motel temporarily because they needed access along the boundary of my property. And the odor. God, that odor. 48:40 Once they began uncovering what he had put there, it was unbearable. They found more than remains. There were pieces of clothing, jewelry. 48:50 In hall number 17, they discovered a finger bone with her wedding ring still around it. The Andersons left before the investigators had even completed their work. They said they couldn't live with the knowledge of what had been happening on the other side of their fence while their babies played in the backyard. 49:06 A month later, Mrs. Hoffman suffered a stroke. The doctor said the two things weren't connected. Carlson's house remained unoccupied for three years. Eventually, it was demolished. The land is still empty today. 49:20 Sometimes I pass it while driving to Detroit to see my daughter, and even now I can make out the shapes of those excavations in the lawn. 28 exact rectangles. No matter how often they reseed the grass, those patches never seem to disappear into the rest of it. 49:36 It's as though the ground remembers what was concealed beneath it, and it refuses to let the rest of us forget. 49:48 Story 4. 49:50 Seven months ago, I moved into a rental house that seemed to be exactly what I'd been looking for. 49:56 It sat in a quiet neighborhood just beyond Phoenix, and at the time I honestly thought I'd found the perfect place. 50:03 I was 32 and had recently been promoted at the accounting firm where I worked. 50:07 After putting money aside for a long time, I could finally afford a home with a real yard instead of squeezing myself into another tiny apartment. 50:16 There was nothing impressive about the house itself. 50:20 It had two bedrooms, yellow siding that had faded over the years, and a garage built for two cars. 50:26 But to me it was a sign that everything I'd been working toward was finally starting to happen. 50:32 During that first week I kept thinking how fortunate I'd been to find such a calm street. Mesquite trees lined the neighborhood and most of the homes looked as though they'd been standing there since the 80s. 50:43 The majority of the neighbors were older couples who minded their own business. 50:47 After years of hearing other people's lives through thin apartment walls, that was precisely the kind of environment I wanted. 50:54 The house immediately beside mine was the exception. 50:58 A man named Travis lived there with what appeared to be a constantly changing group of roommates. He seemed to be in his late 20s and drove a battered Ford F-150, fitted with aftermarket LED headlights bright enough to blind you from a mile down the road. 51:13 He also liked throwing parties, every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. 51:19 In the beginning I tried to give him some grace. Everybody had been young once, hadn't they? But these weren't a few friends coming over to hang out. 51:27 His speakers produced so much bass that the glass in my windows vibrated until three or four in the morning. 51:33 Dozens of people crowded into his backyard, yelling to make themselves heard over the sound system. Their voices carried directly into my bedroom. 51:43 First, I purchased a white noise machine. When that didn't help, I tried heavy-duty earplugs. 51:49 Eventually, I moved every piece of furniture in my bedroom around so I could put the bed as far from his property as the room allowed. 51:56 None of it made any difference. For six weeks, I barely slept on three nights out of every week. 52:02 I dragged myself through meetings with clients, with dark bags beneath my eyes and nowhere near enough rest to function properly. 52:09 Finally, I did the thing I'd been putting off. I called the police department's non-emergency number and reported the noise. By the Monday following that call, something had changed. 52:20 I was getting ready to leave for work at about 7 in the morning when I noticed Travis' pickup sitting at the end of his driveway with the engine running. 52:28 Exhaust drifted behind it in the cool air. 52:31 What struck me as odd was that he wasn't doing anything. 52:34 He wasn't scrolling through his phone or looking around. He just sat behind the wheel, facing straight ahead through the windshield. 52:42 I didn't give it much thought until I reversed out of my garage and drove down the street. 52:47 In the rearview mirror, I saw him leave his driveway and pull in behind me. He kept roughly three car lengths between us. 52:55 We both made the left onto Cedar Road. Then we both turned right onto the main boulevard. 53:01 When I joined I-10, his truck was still behind me, holding that same distance as though he was making a point of it. 53:08 It took about 25 minutes to reach my office. Travis stayed with me for 20 of them before abruptly leaving the freeway at an exit approximately 5 minutes from where I worked. 53:18 The next morning it happened again. The pickup was waiting. 53:22 He came out behind me. He maintained the same carefully controlled space between our vehicles. 53:28 It looked almost as though he'd calculated it. 53:31 On Wednesday, I decided to find out whether this was really what it appeared to be. 53:36 Instead of taking my normal way to work, I drove through a residential neighborhood I had no reason to enter. 53:43 I made arbitrary turns onto roads I had never used before. 53:47 His faded red F-150 with its dented rear bumper remained in my mirror. 53:52 When I turned, he turned. When I stopped at a stop sign, he stopped behind me. 53:57 At one point I pulled into a gas station even though I didn't need gas or anything else. I wanted to see how he would react. 54:05 He continued past the entrance, but when I left the station and resumed driving toward the office, I found him again. 54:12 He was waiting near the next intersection. 54:15 It was as if he already knew where I would come out. 54:18 That evening the first note arrived. When I got home, I found a folded piece of printer paper pushed beneath my front door. 54:25 It hadn't come through the mail and there was no envelope. 54:29 The words had been typed entirely in capital letters. 54:32 Next time, keep your nose out of it. 54:35 Neighbors are supposed to have each other's backs, not send the police after each other. 54:40 You decided how this would go. More notes followed. Each one sounded less stable than the one before. 54:47 Thursdays came through the mail slot while I was having dinner. 54:51 I heard the paper scrape through the opening and drop onto the floor. 54:55 This one included a photograph printed on ordinary paper. 54:59 The image was dark and poor quality, but I recognized my car sitting in my driveway. 55:04 Judging by the angle, whoever took it must have been standing along the boundary of Travis' property. 55:10 Underneath it was another message. 55:13 Rest easy after spoiling a good thing. The police can't be here all the time. 55:18 On Friday morning, I found another sheet on my windshield as I came outside to leave for work. The wiper held it in place. There was only one sentence. 55:28 I have your routine figured out better than you do. 55:31 After that, I began leaving the car in the garage. I kept the door locked, even in the middle of the day, and spent my commute repeatedly checking every mirror. 55:41 His truck kept showing up. Sometimes I spotted it behind me. 55:45 Sometimes it was parked across the street from my office building. 55:49 At other times it rolled slowly past my home at hours when there was no obvious reason for him to be driving around. 55:56 I installed a ring doorbell and started making a record of every incident. I photographed the messages. 56:02 I saved screenshots from the camera showing his pickup passing my house at 2 in the morning, 3.47 and 5.15. 56:10 That Saturday, I took everything I'd gathered to the police station. The woman who handled my report was Officer Miller. 56:17 She looked tired and while I explained what had been happening, she scrolled through the pictures on my phone. 56:24 What she told me was largely what I'd already begun to fear. 56:27 The notes were troubling but they didn't contain threats clear enough to justify immediate intervention. 56:33 Since Travis and I lived on the same street, there might be an innocent explanation for him driving behind me. 56:40 And unless I could establish that he was the person delivering the messages, there were limits to what they could do. 56:46 She said they would have officers patrol the neighborhood more often. She also recommended that I apply for a restraining order on Monday. 56:54 The paperwork she handed me felt absurdly flimsy as I held it. 56:59 That evening, Travis hosted yet another party. The music was even louder than it had been before. 57:05 It felt as though he knew I'd gone to the police station and wanted me to understand what he thought about it. 57:11 I lay awake with my phone clenched in my hand, debating whether to make another noise complaint. 57:17 But I had a feeling that one more call would only push things further. 57:21 At approximately one in the morning, the music briefly quieted. In that gap I heard someone walking across my front porch. The steps were slow and purposeful. 57:31 Then there was a sound that seemed very much like a hand turning my doorknob. 57:35 Sunday passed without anything happening. That should have felt reassuring. 57:40 Instead the silence seemed wrong. No pickup followed me when I went to buy groceries. No messages appeared. 57:48 There were no slow passes by the house late at night. 57:51 Travis' place seemed deserted, and his truck was absent for the whole day. 57:56 I nearly allowed myself to believe I could let my guard down. I spent the afternoon washing clothes and preparing food for the coming work week, trying to behave as though my life was still normal. 58:07 Then that evening I took the trash outside. What I saw made every muscle in my body tighten. 58:14 I had a spare house key hidden near the rear gate. It was inside one of those imitation rocks sold at Home Depot, the kind intended to disappear among the real stones around it. 58:25 The fake rock was now sitting on top of the lid of my garbage can. 58:29 Someone had put it there on purpose. My fingers were shaking when I picked it up and checked the hidden compartment. 58:36 There was nothing inside. The spare key had been taken. 58:40 I rushed into the house, slammed the door, and called a locksmith to come out immediately and rekey the locks. 58:46 I didn't care that having it done on a Sunday would cost $300. 58:51 While I waited, I jammed a chair beneath the knob of the front door. 58:55 Then I dragged the couch over to block the back entrance. 58:58 The locksmith completed the work around 9 that night. With the replacement keys in my pocket, I felt a little less exposed. By midnight, the strain of the previous week had finally worn me down enough that I fell asleep. 59:11 At 2.47 in the morning, I woke up. 59:14 I know the exact minute because I looked at the screen of my phone and stared at it, trying to believe what I was hearing. 59:21 The garage door was going up. It wasn't being smashed or pried open. 59:26 It was rising normally, smoothly, powered by the automatic opener, exactly as it would if somebody had a remote. 59:34 I reached for the baseball bat I had begun keeping beside the bed and moved quietly toward the door between my kitchen and the garage. 59:41 Looking through the window, I saw that the outside garage door was completely raised. My car was the only thing in the space. 59:49 Beyond it, the street was silent and dark. Then headlights flooded the garage. Travis drove his pickup straight inside. He parked beside my car with the ease of someone pulling into a space that belonged to him. 60:02 He climbed out slowly. There was nothing hurried about him. He wore dark jeans and a black hoodie even though the night was warm. 60:11 He wasn't making any effort to conceal himself. 60:14 He simply stood in my garage, looked directly at the window where I was watching, and gave me a little wave with his fingers. I backed away from the glass and called 911. 60:25 In a frantic whisper, I told the dispatcher that somebody had entered my garage and was standing inside it. 60:31 Travis must have heard my voice. He began coming toward the interior door connecting the garage to the kitchen, the same door I was behind. 60:40 At first he didn't touch the handle, he didn't knock. 60:44 He stopped on the other side, perhaps two feet from where I stood, with nothing but that hollow door separating us. 60:51 Then he began speaking. 60:53 His voice was relaxed, almost conversational, and loud enough for me to hear every word. 60:58 You know, this is the house I grew up in. 61:01 My mom and dad had it for 30 years before selling it. 61:04 I was 16 when I helped my dad put that garage opener in. I never forgot the code. 61:10 Juan, 1988. His birth year. 61:14 It's funny how people buy a place and don't bother changing stuff like that. 61:18 He stopped for a moment. I heard him move his weight from one foot to the other, a creaking sound coming from the concrete beneath his boots. 61:27 Those parties weren't really about loud music, man. They were about respect. People on the street take care of one another. But you went right to the police. You didn't even come and talk to me. 61:38 The dispatcher was asking me things. I could hardly concentrate enough to answer. 61:44 I kept giving her my address again and again, begging her to get someone there quickly. 61:49 On the other side of the door, Travis continued. His voice had started to lose its easy tone. 61:55 I've shown you a lot of patience. Driving behind you to work, That was only to let you see that I could. 62:02 Those messages were me trying to get through to you, since apparently you don't want to talk in person. And coming into the house I used to live in, standing here in my old garage. 62:13 This is still me being polite. What I'd actually like is to open this door so I can make things clear. 62:19 Then I heard the handle move. It didn't open. Thank God I had locked it. 62:25 He sighed as though I'd disappointed him. 62:28 Had the locks changed today, huh? Good thinking. 62:32 Except you left the garage code alone, didn't you? And there's another thing you forgot. Your car's sitting right beside my truck. 62:40 Something happening to it while we wait for those police buddies of yours would be a shame. 62:45 A scraping noise came through the door, metal against metal. 62:49 Maybe his keys against the side of my car. 62:52 Then red and blue light swept through the front window and washed over the walls of my living room. The patrol cars had arrived. 63:00 Travis heard the sirens too. He gave a low chuckle. 63:04 That sound tied my stomach into a knot. 63:07 Well, I guess that means I should go, he said, as though we'd been chatting about something completely ordinary. 63:13 But we're still neighbors, aren't we? I'm staying here. You're staying here. There's going to be plenty of time for us to work this out. 63:22 His footsteps moved away without any urgency. Then I heard the door of his pickup open. The officers reached my house just as Travis began reversing out of the garage. 63:33 From my front window, I watched them stop him in the driveway. 63:36 Two officers stepped out of their vehicle carrying flashlights. 63:40 Travis lowered his window and spoke to them, moving his hands casually as he explained himself. 63:46 I couldn't hear his words, but after roughly 10 minutes they allowed him to get out and walk back to his own house. 63:52 That was it. 63:54 One of the officers came to my door afterward. He was young, the kind of young that made me wonder whether he'd only recently left the academy. 64:02 He told me Travis claimed I had agreed to let him use my garage because the people at his earlier party had filled up his driveway. 64:09 There was no evidence that he had forced his way in. 64:12 And because he'd cooperated and left when instructed, they said they couldn't arrest him. 64:17 The officer wrote down my account. He also recorded the damage to the door of my car. 64:23 The scratches were deep. 64:25 They formed the words, mind your own. 64:27 It looked as though whoever was carving them had been interrupted before finishing. 64:32 He told me a detective would contact me in the morning. Once the officers left, there was no chance I was going back to sleep. 64:39 I sat in the living room with every light in the house switched on. The baseball bat lay across my knees. 64:46 I kept watching the windows. 64:48 At about five in the morning, Travis's front door opened. He came outside carrying a mug of coffee, walked to the edge of his yard and stopped. Then he looked straight at my house. 64:59 Our eyes met through the living room window. He lifted his coffee mug in my direction. 65:04 like he was offering a toast. 65:06 That happened three days ago. 65:09 Since then, I've been sleeping in a motel. I only return to the house in daylight when other people are around to see what's happening. 65:16 The detective tells me they're putting a case together. 65:19 At a minimum, he says, the damage scratched into my car should support vandalism charges. 65:25 Travis hasn't thrown another party, but whenever I pass by to collect the mail or pick up some more clothes, his pickup is parked in the driveway. 65:34 And he always makes sure he's somewhere I can see him. Cleaning his vehicle, sitting outside on the porch, cutting back his hedges. 65:43 Whatever he's doing, he's watching. 65:46 Waiting. 65:47 There are still eight months remaining on my lease. Getting out of it would mean paying thousands of dollars I don't have. So this is where things stand. 65:56 A miserable deadlock between two people living side by side. A quiet war I never agreed to be part of. And all I ever wanted was to get a full night's sleep. 66:11 Story 5 There were warnings attached to the rental on Ashwood Drive, but the rent was low enough that we decided not to pay much attention to them. 66:21 Five college students dividing $800 a month between us meant we could afford food and textbooks that semester. 66:28 That mattered more than the uneasy remarks Frank, our landlord, made about the neighbors having colorful personalities while he rattled his keys and kept avoiding our eyes. 66:39 Nathan and I shared the upstairs bedroom. Its window was cracked and it gave us a view of both our yard and the one next door. 66:46 Jessica and her cousin Megan each claimed a bedroom downstairs. Colby made himself a sleeping space in the room that had once been used for dining. 66:55 All of us were around 21, old enough to believe we could cope with just about anything. 67:01 We'd spent a few years living away from our families and learned to file our own taxes, which somehow felt like proof that we understood the world. The place wasn't much to look at. The yellow siding had lost most of its color. 67:14 Rust and sheer optimism seemed to be the only things keeping the fence upright. 67:19 In the kitchen, the cupboard doors never shut properly. 67:23 But we had it for a year. 67:25 That first afternoon, we carried in used furniture and talked about everything we were going to do there. dinner with friends, study nights, all those plans you make when you're young and putting your signature on your first proper lease. 67:38 The duplex beside us looked like a sinister version of the same house. The buildings had the same basic shape, but where our yard had Jessica's effort at planting flowers and the strings of lights Nathan had hung unevenly across the porch, theirs had shards of glass worked into the dirt. 67:56 Every window was covered with aluminum foil. 67:59 Four men lived there. They all had sunken cheeks in that restless, twitching manner you associate with people who have been using meth for a long time. 68:08 It was difficult to guess their ages, but I would have put them somewhere between 35 and 50. 68:14 Before you even caught sight of them, you smelled the chemicals. 68:18 The odor had a sharp, acidic edge. 68:20 When the wind came from their direction, it made the inside of your nose itch and brought tears to your eyes. 68:26 Among the students renting other houses on our block, their fights were already notorious. 68:32 At three in the morning, they would erupt into screaming matches that sounded like something boiling over. 68:38 Sometimes somebody ended up being hurled against the fence. Other times they shattered car windows with crowbars. 68:45 One of the men behaved differently. He was tall and had a shaved head, while the others screamed at one another or swung their fists. He stayed motionless on the porch, working his way through one cigarette after another. 68:59 Prison tattoos climbed his neck in dark lines that reminded me of veins. His eyes were a faded gray, the color of ice after it's been mixed with dirt. 69:09 Whenever I got out of my car and headed toward our front door, he watched. He didn't need to move his head. 69:15 Only his eyes shifted following every step until I disappeared into the house. 69:20 On a Thursday evening in early September, one of their ordinary arguments became something far worse. 69:26 Nathan and I were in our room working through material for midterms. 69:30 Jessica was at the restaurant where she worked, and downstairs, Megan and Colby were watching Netflix. Then we heard the impact. 69:38 It wasn't a bottle breaking or a door being slammed, the noises we'd almost become accustomed to. 69:44 It was somebody's body striking our fence with enough force to split the post. 69:49 I went to the bedroom window. Two of the men were attacking a third with what appeared to be lengths of rebar. 69:56 They struck his legs and ribs in a steady, deliberate way. 69:59 He had curled up on the ground trying to keep his arms over his head. 70:03 The tall man stood nearby and watched. Ten feet away his roommate was being beaten into the dirt and he calmly lit another cigarette. His hands didn't shake. Nathan had already started calling 911 but I couldn't stop looking at the tall man's face. There was a faint smile on it. 70:22 a pleased little smile he looked like somebody enjoying a television program he'd been waiting all week to see the police arrived about 15 minutes later by then the man on the ground had lost consciousness and blood had gathered beneath his face the officers called for an ambulance the other three lied without hesitation saying he'd fallen down the stairs somehow the police either accepted that explanation or didn't care enough to question it properly After that, the tall man's interest in me became something I could feel before I even looked in his direction. 70:57 It made my skin tighten with the sense that I was in danger. 71:00 Somehow, he worked out my routine. 71:03 When I left for morning classes at 8.30, he would be on the porch. When I returned at around 2, he would be there again, always in the same plastic chair with the damaged armrest, always smoking, always looking at me. 71:17 Then he began appearing at the supermarket I used. He never pushed a card or carried a basket. He would drift along the aisles until he located me, then position himself exactly two aisles away. 71:30 It was close enough that I could sense his attention through the openings between products on the shelves. 71:36 One day I tried to make sure I wasn't imagining it. I doubled back through the cereal aisle three separate times. 71:42 Every time he shifted his position so he could continue watching me. 71:47 I studied at a coffee shop on campus on Tuesday afternoons. 71:51 Suddenly he started appearing there too. He would sit in a corner with nothing in front of him but a cup of water. 71:57 Above the edge of my laptop I could see those pale gray eyes fixed on me. 72:02 Nathan wanted to go over and challenge him. I begged him not to. 72:07 I kept remembering that quiet smile while the other man lay bleeding outside. 72:11 Someone who could watch that happen and enjoy it wasn't someone I wanted Nathan provoking. 72:17 The following week the stalking became more direct. At 11 one night I found him outside our front door. He wasn't knocking. he wasn't touching the handle he was simply standing in the darkness breathing loudly enough for the sound to reach me through the wood i'd come downstairs for a glass of water and noticed his outline through the frosted glass panel in the door a tall dark silhouette completely still my phone was upstairs nathan was sleeping for 20 minutes i remained in the hallway with my bare feet against the cold wooden floor staring at that shape and silently begging him to go away Finally, Jessica came home. 72:56 The moment her key rattled in the lock, he withdrew into the dark so quickly that she never saw him. 73:02 She walked inside complaining about her evening at work. I was shaking so badly that I struggled to explain what had just happened. 73:10 The next morning, cigarette ends lay on our doormat. They had been placed in a precise circle. 73:16 Everyone was the brand he smoked. Everyone had been crushed in the same way. 73:21 Nathan called the police. They told him that standing on a porch wasn't a crime, and unless we had evidence of threats or trespassing, there wasn't anything they could do. 73:31 The officer who came out was a weary-looking woman. 73:35 I had the impression she had probably dealt with the men next door before. 73:39 She shrugged and recommended stronger locks. Maybe cameras too, if we were that concerned. 73:45 That Friday, Nathan and I returned from a late movie and found the tall man sitting on our porch steps. 73:51 Our steps, not his. 73:54 He had a pocket knife in his hand and was cutting into the wooden railing. 73:58 Later, when we examined the deep marks he'd left, we realized he had carved my initials. 74:03 Nathan snapped. He told him to get the hell off our property. 74:08 His voice kept breaking, caught somewhere between fury and fear. 74:12 I stayed behind Nathan, squeezing his arms so tightly that I left marks on his skin. 74:18 The tall man rose slowly. He seemed to unfold himself, almost like an insect, until he stood over both of us. 74:26 He had to be at least six feet four. 74:28 Homemade tattoos covered his arms, the sort that looked as though an infection was only a matter of time. 74:35 He bent toward me until he was close enough that I could smell him. 74:38 Cigarette smoke, chemicals, and beneath them an odor like meat beginning to spoil. 74:45 Then he said my first name. Nothing else. 74:48 Just my name, whispered in a way that made it sound as though he had rehearsed saying it. 74:53 He turned and walked back toward the duplex without another word. At the edge of his property, he stopped. He glanced back at me. Then he blew me a kiss. 75:03 Nathan called 911 again. 75:06 This time two officers came. They made a report and photographed the initials cut into the railing. But because the man had gone away after being told to leave, they said the worst they could classify it as was misdemeanor vandalism. 75:20 After that, we began changing the way we lived. Nathan accompanied me every time I went to my car or came back from it. We pulled what we had, using Jessica's restaurant tip money to buy a doorbell camera. 75:32 Colby began sleeping on the downstairs couch, keeping a baseball bat where he could grab it. 75:38 For three days, the tall man didn't appear anywhere. I began to hope that having the police come over had finally frightened him into leaving me alone. 75:46 Then around 2 on Monday morning, Nathan woke me by gripping my shoulder. 75:51 He was rigid beside me in bed. 75:53 From below our cracked window, we could hear voices. They weren't shouting this time. They were speaking quietly. 76:00 Underneath the conversation was the unmistakable noise of someone working at the latch on our rear gate. 76:06 We had secured it with a padlock. 76:09 Now we could hear metal dragging against metal as somebody tested it and tried to force it. 76:14 Nathan was already dialing 911 when I moved to the window and looked between the blinds. 76:20 Three shapes were in the backyard area, the tall man and two of the men he lived with. 76:25 They all moved with that nervous, jerking energy, but they were making an effort not to be heard. 76:31 One carried bolt cutters, another held an object concealed in a towel. From its shape and the way its weight pulled at his hand, I thought it might be a crowbar, or something worse. They defeated the padlock in under a minute. 76:45 Then they were fully inside the enclosed yard, heading toward the house as though each of them already knew his part. 76:52 The tall man moved directly beneath our bedroom window. 76:56 He looked upward like there was no question in his mind about which room I slept in. 77:01 The other two separated. They began examining the back entrance and the downstairs bedroom windows, where Jessica and Megan were asleep. 77:09 My heart was pounding so hard that I felt it in my throat. 77:13 Then the tall man leaned a ladder against the wall, climbed up to our window and put his fingers against the screen. 77:19 He traced them across the mesh, apparently checking how much effort it would take to slice through. 77:25 Nathan whispered urgently into his phone. 77:28 He gave the operator our address and told her they were trying to enter the house right then. 77:33 Please hurry. We need someone here now. 77:36 I could hear the dispatcher's reply through the phone. 77:40 Officers were coming. We should remain inside, keep the line open. 77:45 But waiting those few minutes felt like waiting hours. 77:48 At the rear door, one of the men had begun manipulating the lock with a metal object. The scratching carried upward through the walls. 77:56 Meanwhile, the tall man took out what looked like a box cutter. He started cutting our screen. 78:02 Slow, deliberate passes of the blade. 78:05 As he worked, the mesh bent and curled into the room. 78:08 Finally, it split with a horrible tearing noise. His hand began to come through. 78:14 At that moment, sirens sounded in the distance. They weren't right outside yet, but they were near enough. All three men reacted instantly. It was like turning on a light and watching roaches scatter. 78:26 The tall man pulled his arm away so violently that some of his skin caught on the torn mesh. Then they all ran toward the rear gate. 78:34 In the scramble, the shorter one, the man with tattoos on his face, caught his foot on Jessica's garden hose. 78:41 He hit the ground hard. The towel covered object flew out of his grip and landed heavily in the grass. 78:47 Nobody paused to help him. Nobody went back for the weapon. 78:51 They kept moving and disappeared through the gate into the alley behind the house. The sirens grew louder. Then red and blue light filled the backyard. Officers with flashlights out ran after them along the same route. Nathan and I kept our bedroom locked. We held each other and trembled while police radios crackled outside. 79:11 Three suspects running west need additional units, requesting a K9 to track. 79:17 Within ten minutes the officers found all three hiding in a shed two blocks away. 79:22 They returned with them in separate patrol cars. Through the bedroom window I saw the tall man sitting in the back of one cruiser. 79:30 Even with that distance between us, even with his wrists cuffed behind his back, he found my eyes. And he stared. 79:38 The police searched the men and obtained a warrant to search the duplex that night. They found two knives, brass knuckles, and enough meth to bring charges that meant serious prison sentences. 79:49 The object abandoned in our grass wasn't a crowbar. It was a shortened length of pipe. 79:55 One end had been filed into a sharp edge. The next morning a detective interviewed us. He was an older man with kind eyes who kept addressing me as Hun. 80:05 He told us they had discovered notebooks in the tall man's room. Page after page was devoted to me. My daily routine, the number on my license plate, descriptions of the clothes I wore, detailed plans for what he intended to do when he could get me alone. 80:21 Some pages contained drawings. The detective refused to show me those. He only said they demonstrated intent and that we were fortunate to have made the call when we did. 80:32 The tall man received 15 years. There were the meth charges, attempted breaking and entering, and stalking. 80:39 Apparently, he was also already on parole. 80:43 The detective wouldn't explain what the earlier offense had been, but he made it clear that violence had been involved. 80:49 The other two received sentences of five to seven years each. We had to give testimony at the preliminary hearing, across the courtroom with guards positioned between us. The tall man still wouldn't stop watching me. 81:02 His lips moved. 81:04 I couldn't understand the words, but I knew they weren't expressions of regret. 81:09 The prosecutor was a sharp woman in her 40s who had no patience for games. She said the notebooks were enough on their own to demonstrate that whatever he had intended that night had been planned in advance. 81:20 She presented the jury with photographs of the cut window screen, the cigarettes arranged in a circle. My initials dug into the wood of the porch railing. 81:30 Apparently, those were only the pieces of evidence they could display in court. 81:35 Two weeks after the trial, we left the house. We ended the lease early and Frank didn't even argue with us about keeping the deposit. 81:42 Eventually, we learned we hadn't been the first people renting that house to have trouble with the duplex. We were simply the first who had survived long enough to pursue charges. 81:52 Jessica located another place for us closer to campus. It cost more, but the surrounding homes belonged to families and retired professors. They were the kind of neighbors who objected to loud music after nine at night. 82:05 After Ashwood Drive, that sounded like heaven. Six months later, I encountered the detective in a downtown coffee shop. He knew who I was right away. 82:14 He asked how I had been doing, and there was enough real concern in his voice that I started tearing up beside the espresso machine. 82:22 Then he told me something that still sends a chill through my entire body. 82:26 They had found additional notebooks hidden above the ceiling in the tall man's room. Older notebooks. Those contained information about other young women. 82:35 Three of them over a period of two years. 82:38 Everyone was a college student. 82:41 Everyone had lived within a few blocks of the duplex. 82:44 Two had suddenly left, breaking their leases the same way we had. 82:48 The third had been reported missing six months before we moved into the house. They had never been able to prove anything. 82:55 The detective told me the tall man refused to talk. He probably wasn't ever going to confess to anything. 83:02 But the way the detective said it made the meaning underneath his words unmistakable. 83:07 We had escaped just in time. Nathan and I are still together. 83:11 We live in another state now. Both of us have finished college and we have ordinary jobs. But I still check the locks over and over. 83:20 I still search faces and crowds for those washed out grey eyes. 83:24 Sometimes I wake in the dark, convinced I can hear a blade cutting through a window screen. 83:30 At the coffee shop that day, the detective gave me his card. He told me I could call him if I ever needed anything. 83:37 I still keep it in my wallet. 83:39 It feels like something that protects me. Something that proves it all really happened. 83:44 That we made it through. That those sirens in the middle of the night weren't something I imagined. They really did save my life. 83:57 Story 6 Four inches hardly seems worth thinking about until someone decides to take them out of your backyard. 84:05 It happened one morning in August 2016. 84:09 I was outside watering the tomato plants when I spotted Douglas Brenner at the edge of my property. 84:14 A contractor was with him, and beside them sat a stack of fence posts. 84:19 They were putting markers into the ground. 84:22 Even before I understood exactly what they were doing, I could tell something wasn't right. 84:28 The boundary they were laying out extended into my yard, beyond the place where the old chain-link fence had stood for 40 years. 84:35 Inside the house, Oliver, my rescue beagle, barked at them through the window. He seemed to recognize trouble before I'd fully made sense of it. 84:44 I walked over with the hose still in my hand, water dripping down onto my bare feet. 84:49 At first, Douglas acted as though I wasn't there. He continued directing the contractor toward different spots, checking the little notebook he carried everywhere. When I asked what was going on, he answered without raising his eyes. He was correcting a mistake that had been left alone for 40 years, he said. The property boundary had been wrong since before I was even born. That narrow strip of lawn I'd spent the last two years mowing. 85:15 According to Douglas, it had belonged to him all along. 85:18 Before I go any further, I need to explain what kind of person he was, because there was nothing ordinary about Douglas Brenner. 85:27 He was in his mid-fifties and worked some sort of overnight security position. 85:32 Every evening he left at exactly ten. 85:35 He'd arrived in the neighborhood about three years before I inherited my grandmother's house, and from the beginning, something about him seemed off. 85:43 At six feet three, he seemed unnaturally tall. 85:47 When he walked, he tilted his upper body forward, as though he were forcing himself through an obstacle nobody else could see. 85:54 He dyed his hair a fierce auburn that looked almost rust-colored in direct sunlight. It was always combed straight back, held in place with enough gel for three heads of hair. 86:05 But the measuring was what really set him apart. At any hour, I might find him outside with a tape measure. 86:11 He measured the gap between his driveway and the curb, the distance from the mailbox to his front entrance. 86:18 Whatever number he got, he wrote it in that notebook. 86:21 Once, just after sunrise, I watched him measure how tall his grass was before he cut it. 86:26 He treated his yard like an investigation scene that had to be recorded and checked constantly. 86:32 Now he had decided he needed four inches of mine. 86:36 Our disagreement began reasonably enough. I said nobody should put up a fence until we had checked the property documents at City Hall. 86:44 He immediately reached into his back pocket and produced a folded survey. 86:49 Naturally, he already had one with him. Pencil annotations and calculations covered it. 86:54 He ran a finger along the boundary shown on the map. 86:58 I noticed that even his fingernail was neatly manicured. 87:02 The line he indicated did in fact extend into the area I had always understood to be my yard. 87:08 But my grandmother had lived in that house since 1976. The chain link fence was already standing when she bought it. 87:15 Surely a boundary that had existed for 40 years had to mean something. 87:20 While Douglas talked, I searched on my phone and came across the term adverse possession. 87:26 When I mentioned it, his expression shifted. It wasn't some obvious outburst. His jaw simply became tight, and a vein rose at his temple, twitching beneath the skin like a small worm. 87:38 He took his time folding the survey. With his thumbnail, he pressed each crease flat. 87:44 Then he told me I had 24 hours to rethink my position before he went ahead with the installation. 87:50 That evening I couldn't get the exchange out of my head. I kept remembering the way his voice had lowered when he told me to reconsider. How his mouth had formed a smile while his eyes remained empty and never blinked. 88:02 Oliver was unsettled too. He kept giving low growls toward the window on the side facing Douglas' house. At around midnight a sound outside made me look through the blinds. Douglas was in the yard with a flashlight and his measuring tape. Again and again he walked the strip we were arguing over. 88:20 Every so often he stopped to put another number in the notebook. For two straight hours he paced and measured. 88:27 At one point he stopped outside my bedroom window and remained there for a full minute. 88:32 His flashlight pointed at the ground but it was obvious he knew which room I was in. 88:37 I called my friend Amy and asked whether I was letting my imagination get carried away. 88:41 She told me to keep a record of everything. 88:44 Maybe put up a camera. I wish I had taken that advice seriously sooner. 88:49 The following morning Wednesday, I arrived at City Hall as soon as it opened. The clerk who assisted me was named Dolores. She wore cat-eye glasses, and every fingernail was painted a different color. 89:02 On a computer that looked ancient, she brought up the records for the property. 89:07 The original lot plans dated to 1951, but they didn't make the precise boundary particularly clear. The distances were recorded using an old surveying method that nobody seemed to use anymore. 89:19 Then Dolores found something worth looking at. In 1976, when my grandmother purchased the house, a surveyor had added a note identifying the existing fence as the established boundary marker. 89:32 She printed the documents and went over the important passages with a yellow highlighter that smelled like imitation lemon. 89:38 I left feeling as though I'd finally proved my point. 89:42 On the way home, I prepared an entire speech about honoring boundaries that had been in place for decades and treating the people beside you decently. 89:50 But when I pulled in, the contractor was already working. 89:53 The posthole digger was running. They had started building precisely where Douglas had wanted. Fence posts were now set in concrete inside those four inches of my lawn. 90:04 I went straight over with the paperwork. Oliver came behind me on his leash. 90:09 Given how angry I was, I didn't trust the situation enough to let him loose and risk him biting somebody. 90:15 Douglas stood beside his garage with his arms folded, overseeing the work. 90:20 I held out what Dolores had given me. He didn't even glance at it. 90:24 He looked at me with an expression that was somewhere between entertainment and disgust, as though I were a little kid proudly presenting a picture drawn in crayon. 90:34 He told me possession amounted to nine-tenths of the law. Unless I could come up with $10,000 for a proper survey and legal expenses, he said, I ought to accept the way things were. Then he said something that made the skin on my scalp tighten. 90:49 Your grandmother had more sense than you. She understood when something should be left alone. 90:55 There was an implication in the way he said it, as though he had already gone through this with her. 91:01 At that moment I understood that the argument wasn't really about a four inch strip of grass. 91:06 Oliver began barking wildly and straining against the lead. Douglas continued watching us with those expressionless eyes until I finally went back into the house. 91:16 On Thursday morning I found one of my tires ruined. It wasn't merely deflated. The sidewall had been cut over and over, leaving strips of rubber hanging from it like ribbons. 91:26 I was certain Douglas had done it, but certainty wasn't proof. The camera I'd ordered wasn't due to arrive until Monday. 91:35 I called work and said I was sick, then took the car to a tire shop downtown. 91:40 The mechanic was young, perhaps twenty, with stretched ear earrings and oil work beneath his nails. 91:46 He asked whether I had made somebody angry. There was no doubt in his mind that someone had deliberately done that damage. 91:53 Replacing the tire cost $200 I couldn't comfortably spare. When I returned, the new fence was finished. Douglas had already attached a no trespassing sign on his side, turned so I could read it from my yard. 92:06 But the fence wasn't the worst thing waiting for me. 92:09 Oliver was loose out front. The gate to my backyard stood wide open. 92:14 He never wandered out of the backyard by himself. Somebody had opened it and let him go. 92:20 I found him investigating Mrs. Garrison's petunias. Fortunately, he wasn't hurt, but I understood what I was being told. 92:28 Friday passed quietly. 92:30 In some ways, that felt worse than another incident. 92:34 I completed my whole shift and came home to a house that appeared undisturbed. 92:38 Douglas' car was absent. His night shift. 92:42 From the kitchen window, I looked at the new fence and the four inches he had claimed, and I could feel anger gathering in my chest. 92:49 At around 8 that evening, I took a tape measure from my grandmother's old toolbox and went outside. 92:55 I wanted a record of exactly how far he had built onto my property. 92:59 The mark left by the old fence was still visible in the lawn. I crouched beside it and began measuring. Then I heard someone breathing behind me. 93:08 Heavy breaths. 93:10 Controlled, intentional breaths. Douglas stood three feet away. He wore his security clothes, black trousers and a black shirt bearing a company emblem I couldn't identify in the fading light. 93:22 He must have returned after driving away. 93:25 Taking measurements won't make it different, he said. 93:28 His voice was so level that goosebumps rose on my arms. 93:32 But if that helps you, carry on. I can wait. 93:36 And he did. For 20 minutes he remained behind me while I pretended to keep checking the boundary. My hand shook so badly that I could hardly hold the tape in place. Saturday morning brought something else. 93:48 At about 7, Oliver woke me with frantic barking and scratching at the back door. I went to the kitchen window. Douglas was inside my backyard. 93:57 Not on the little strip he had appropriated. He was well into my actual yard, near the tomatoes. 94:04 He knelt on the ground, drawing in his notebook. 94:07 Every now and then he got up and took pictures with a digital camera old enough to look like a museum exhibit. 94:13 I pulled the door open and went to confront him. 94:16 He rose calmly and approached me. There was no hurry in his movements. 94:21 Nothing that suggested he thought being there required an explanation. 94:25 The boundary on your eastern side is wrong as well, he said, as casually as someone commenting on the temperature. 94:31 The people who owned my place before me allowed your grandmother to extend into that area too. Three feet, maybe three and a half. 94:40 He lifted the notebook toward me. Its pages were crowded with numbers and diagrams I couldn't begin to understand. 94:47 I'm being considerate by only reclaiming the four inches on the northern side for now. 94:52 The words made my knees feel unsteady. 94:55 The fence wasn't going to be the end of this. 94:58 Saturday night was when things truly escalated. 95:01 Earlier I had called the police about him entering the yard. They said that without evidence of a threat or damage. It was a civil dispute. 95:09 The officer who stopped by was a tired looking woman named Reeves. Essentially her advice was to hire an attorney. 95:16 Around 11 that night I was preparing to go to bed when Oliver started growling at the front entrance. Through the peephole, I saw Douglas on the porch. He wasn't knocking. He wasn't moving. 95:28 He stood facing the door with his hands joined behind his back. 95:32 I kept the door shut and called 911. The officers arrived 15 minutes later. By then, he had disappeared. 95:40 Officer Reeves returned and seemed irritated. She suggested that perhaps I was making too much of an argument between neighbors. 95:47 Then we noticed what he had left behind. 95:50 A manila envelope had been slipped into the screen door. 95:54 It held dozens of photographs of my home. 95:57 Some were several years old. 95:59 My grandmother in the garden. My grandmother collecting the mail. 96:03 There were even pictures taken through the windows, showing her sitting inside watching television. 96:09 Beneath the photographs was a note written by hand. 96:12 She recognized why boundaries matter. You still have to learn. 96:17 On Sunday I decided I had to push back. 96:20 But I didn't go outside and start another argument. 96:23 I sat at my grandmother's old desk and spent the morning sorting through her papers, looking for any reference to Douglas. 96:30 I found one in a notebook from 2014. 96:34 In her unsteady handwriting, she had described the odd man next door who watched her through the fence. She had recorded times and dates, much the way he recorded his measurements. 96:44 One entry made my stomach turn. He enters the yard while I'm at church, moves things slightly so I'll notice he has been here, The police won't do anything. Had stronger locks fitted today. 96:57 For two years before her death, my grandmother had been living with this. She had never told anyone. 97:03 I called Amy and asked her to come over. I didn't want to spend any more time there by myself. 97:09 She arrived at about 2 with her husband Carl. He was a contractor. 97:14 After one look at the fence, he said Douglas hadn't even had the work done properly. The posts hadn't been set correctly. The construction was poor enough that we might be able to challenge it legally on safety grounds. 97:26 While we were talking through what I could do, Douglas appeared beside the new fence. He seemed to materialize there as though he'd been waiting for the right moment. 97:35 You've got company, he said to me. He completely disregarded Amy and Carl. 97:41 That's good, but they won't stay forever. Nobody does. 97:46 After that, it'll be you and me again, working out what belongs to me. 97:51 Later that evening, Amy and Carl went home. 97:54 I begged them to stay. They left anyway. 97:57 After they were gone, I decided I couldn't continue like this. I couldn't spend every hour being careful, wondering what he would do next. 98:06 I found a locksmith who handled emergencies and had him come to the house. He replaced every lock, installed deadbolts, secured the windows. 98:15 The work cost $800, charged to credit cards I had been struggling to pay off. 98:21 While he worked, Douglas watched from his kitchen. 98:24 The notebook stayed in his hand. He kept writing. 98:28 At around nine, just as the locksmith was leaving, someone knocked at my front door. 98:32 Douglas. 98:34 This time he wasn't silently looming outside. It was an ordinary courteous knock. 98:40 I went against every warning instinct I had and opened the door a little, leaving the chain fastened. 98:45 He stood there holding a pie. 98:48 A real pie. It was so bizarrely domestic that it might have belonged in a sitcom. 98:53 Steam was still coming off the crust. 98:56 Apple, he told me. 98:58 He had arranged his face into something he probably imagined looked welcoming. 99:03 A gesture to clear up any confusion. Your grandmother was very fond of the pies I made. 99:09 She once gave me a key so I could put them inside when she was out. 99:13 I've still got it, as a matter of fact. Her key. Though I imagine it won't open the door anymore, will it? 99:20 Then he smiled. 99:22 All teeth. I slammed the door hard enough to make the walls tremble. 99:27 On Monday morning I woke to find Oliver in my bedroom. That was odd. I had left him downstairs the previous night. The rear door remained locked. The deadbolt was still engaged, but the frame had a little splintering around it as though someone had started trying to force the door and then abandoned the attempt. 99:45 A survey lay on my kitchen table. It wasn't a photocopy. 99:50 It was an original map from 1951. 99:53 Fresh red lines had been drawn across it. 99:56 Everyone extended into the property I owned. 99:59 He wasn't claiming only four inches anymore. 100:02 On the eastern side, the new marks took almost six feet. On the south, they took three. A yellow sticky note was attached. 100:10 Original property limits. 100:12 Glad to talk about a schedule for putting things right. 100:16 Douglas Brenner My hands trembled so violently that my coffee mug slipped out of them. It shattered across the floor. 100:24 Oliver kept whining and pawing at the front door, desperate to get outside. 100:29 Then I looked through the window. During the night, Douglas had placed survey stakes all over my yard. 100:35 Orange flags marked the new territory he had decided was his. 100:39 But it was the garden that finally broke me. My grandmother's garden had been destroyed. Every tomato plant had been pulled out of the earth. 100:48 He had laid them in a perfectly straight row along what he claimed was the correct boundary. 100:53 I called the police again. This time they sent somebody different. 100:57 Officer Daniels was younger, and unlike the others, he took what I said seriously. He examined the damaged doorframe, the photographs Douglas had delivered, the entries in my grandmother's journal. 101:10 It turned out there was a history attached to Douglas Brenner. Not a record of violence exactly, but property arguments at three former addresses. 101:19 In every case, the person he targeted had been a woman living alone. In every case, the situation intensified until she moved away. 101:27 Daniels helped me apply for an emergency restraining order. He explained each step, stayed with me through the process, and even gave me a number where I could reach him directly. 101:38 The hearing was scheduled for Thursday. From Monday through Wednesday, Oliver and I stayed at Amy's. 101:44 I only went back to the house with Carl, collecting clothing and whatever else I needed. Douglas must have been monitoring those visits. 101:52 Every time we arrived, something else had changed. 101:55 More stakes had appeared. 101:57 Red markings had been spray-painted onto my driveway. 102:01 Juan saw my mail had been arranged across the porch in a flawless grid. Each envelope sat exactly two inches from the next. 102:08 Thursday in court felt almost unreal. Douglas wore a suit that clearly hadn't been used in a long time. It pulled too tightly across his shoulders. 102:18 The trouser leg stopped an inch too high. He carried a briefcase filled with what he called his documentation. 102:25 Hundreds of pages, measurements, photographs, surveys. Each page sat in a transparent plastic sleeve with a typed label. 102:33 When he addressed the judge, even his voice sounded different. It had risen in pitch and taken on an almost childish quality. He explained that all he wanted was to bring the neighborhood back into its proper order. 102:45 Judge Harrison was a woman who didn't appear willing to indulge any nonsense. 102:50 She examined his materials for perhaps 30 seconds. Then she approved the restraining order. 102:56 Douglas was prohibited from coming within 100 feet of either me or my property. 103:01 He had to take away every stake and marker he had put up. The dispute over the fence would be resolved through civil court. While the judge read the ruling, Douglas kept the same expression. But his left eye began twitching. 103:14 A quick, repeated flutter. 103:17 It made him look as though he were winking again and again. 103:20 He packed the briefcase with slow precision. 103:23 Every sheet went back into its designated place. Then he stood and looked directly at me. For ten full seconds he didn't turn away. 103:32 Finally, Officer Daniels told him to keep moving. The next three days were quiet. The stakes vanished. 103:39 The fence stayed, but I was prepared to address that through the proper legal process. 103:44 For the first time in a while I slept until morning. By Sunday evening I was home again and almost beginning to feel like myself. 103:52 Then Oliver barked at the rear door. Douglas wasn't outside. He couldn't be there without breaching the order. Instead, dozens of garden gnomes stood in a row along the fence. They were on his side. 104:05 Everyone faced my house. Each had a tiny notebook glued into its hands. 104:10 Miniature measuring tapes hung from their belts. 104:13 In the middle stood a bigger gnome with auburn hair painted onto its head. It was unmistakably supposed to represent Douglas. 104:21 I called Daniels. He came over and photographed them. But technically he told me the display didn't violate the order. The figures were on Douglas' property. 104:31 That night, I decided I was finished. 104:34 On Monday morning, I contacted a realtor. Three weeks later, the house was sold. I accepted less than its market value. I didn't care. 104:43 The buyers were a young family with three children. The sort of busy, noisy household I thought Douglas would have a harder time intimidating. 104:52 Before I left, I drove past the place once more. He was in his yard. With his tape measure, he was checking the spaces between the gnomes. He adjusted their positions ever so slightly. The new family stayed six months before they had him arrested for entering their property. 105:09 He's in jail, Amy told me afterward. 105:12 It wasn't the harassment that put him there. He violated probation tied to an earlier stalking conviction in another state. 105:20 I still dream about that strip of grass, those four inches. 105:24 I dream about discovering Douglas in my kitchen with his notebook open, measuring the space between my terror and whatever obsession was driving him. 105:38 story seven my name is daniel when all of this happened i had been living on a quiet cul-de-sac for roughly three years it wasn't a flawless neighborhood but there was a familiar ease to life there the kind that lets you stop thinking about how unpredictable everything beyond your own street can be most days i did my job from home on weekends i grilled with a few of the people who lived nearby and in the evenings i usually settled onto the porch with a cold beer That comfortable routine began falling apart when one homeowner decided that keeping the rest of us in line was his personal responsibility. 106:16 His name was Richard. 106:18 Nobody had much patience for him from the beginning, but none of us imagined where his behavior would eventually lead. 106:25 Richard drove a large red pickup that seemed to be as much a part of him as his own name. 106:30 He regularly left it at an angle across somebody else's driveway or parked it so that it obstructed part of the road. 106:37 Ask him to move and you would get a smug little smile. Or he would launch into an explanation about some neighborhood regulation that sounded as though he had invented it while you were standing there. 106:47 Once he informed me that my garbage cans were pointed in the wrong direction. 106:52 He said he would report me. 106:54 At the time, I found it ridiculous enough to laugh about. 106:57 Everybody did, but the petty interference kept accumulating. 107:02 Unfounded complaints about people's lawns made up restrictions concerning hedges, instructions to children about which places they were permitted to ride their bicycles. 107:13 After a while it stopped seeming like the harmless habits of an eccentric man. It began to feel as though he liked testing how far he could push us, simply to make sure we remembered that he could. 107:24 The first real sign that something more serious was happening came when I began seeing his wife, Ellen, outside more frequently. 107:32 She was always courteous, but she rarely had much to say. Whenever Richard was close by, she avoided meeting anyone's eyes. 107:40 One afternoon I was taking my dog for a walk when I noticed her pulling down a sleeve to cover dark marks on her arm. 107:46 Later I saw faint discoloration along her jaw that looked like bruising. 107:51 Another neighbor carefully asked whether she was okay. 107:55 I'm fine, Ellen said quickly, forcing the answer out before disappearing into the house. 108:01 None of us needed to discuss what we were thinking. We were concerned about her, but challenging Richard felt like deliberately stepping into the path of a storm. 108:10 Then on a muggy evening, he burst out of his house because the children next door were playing tag in their own yard. 108:17 He began shouting about people showing him no respect, about noise rules being broken. 108:23 As he yelled, he pointed at one of the boys, a child who couldn't have been much older than 10. Then he went to his pickup and came back holding a handgun. 108:33 He waved it as he talked, using it to give force to the things he was saying. For a second, everyone seemed unable to move. Then the parents screamed and the children ran. 108:43 The whole block fell quiet except for Richard, who continued ranting. 108:47 That was when we understood that we were dealing with something beyond an unpleasant man who lived nearby. 108:53 The situation was ready to explode. That evening frightened every family on the street. 108:59 A few of us called the police, but by the time officers arrived, Richard had settled himself down. 109:04 He stood against his truck behaving as though nothing noteworthy had occurred. 109:09 He told them a story about children acting aggressively and making him feel threatened. Because nobody had been physically injured, the officers left after giving him a warning. 109:19 I remember looking at the parents afterward. Their expressions were a mixture of shock and disbelief. 109:25 How was someone waving a handgun around children not an immediate threat? 109:30 After that we all understood that we couldn't count on help arriving quickly enough to stop him. 109:35 It felt as though Richard had discovered a gap in the system and knew exactly how to use it. 109:40 What disturbed me almost as much was the way he appeared to enjoy our fear. 109:44 The next day he strolled down the street whistling. His steps were slow, deliberate. It was hard not to read it as a message that he was still there and had no intention of leaving. 109:56 Ellen followed a little behind him, holding a grocery bag so tightly that the skin across her knuckles had gone pale. 110:03 She didn't look at anybody. 110:05 Watching her gave me an uneasy feeling that she knew things the rest of us weren't prepared to hear, or things she wasn't permitted to tell us. 110:13 Her silence somehow made it all feel heavier than Richard's open threats. 110:17 Sometimes what a person can't say seems to support every terrible possibility you're already imagining. 110:23 We began gathering quietly in one another's houses after dark. They weren't formal neighborhood meetings, just people sitting in living rooms drinking coffee and comparing the strange experiences they'd had with him. 110:36 One household had begun recording every occasion when his pickup blocked their driveway. 110:41 Another couple told us he had threatened to file a complaint against them for pruning a tree. 110:46 As we listened to each other, a pattern became impossible to ignore. Richard wasn't behaving unpredictably. There was a method to it. He wanted to be in charge. 110:57 If frightening people didn't give him that power, he would try to obtain it with complaints, forms, and rules that didn't actually exist. 111:05 Eventually, somebody proposed that we all start collecting evidence. 111:09 Pictures whenever his truck obstructed a driveway. 111:12 Audio of him yelling. 111:14 Written accounts that included the date and time of every incident. 111:18 It felt secretive. 111:20 Almost as though we were organizing some hidden effort against a ruler who had taken over our street. 111:25 But doing nothing meant sitting around until he finally went too far to undo what happened. 111:31 Every conversation had the same fear beneath it. 111:34 What if the next confrontation ended with more than shouting? What if instead of displaying the gun, he fired it? 111:41 Parents began bringing their children inside before the light was gone. The neighborhood that had once been full of kids peddling around the circle became a line of houses with curtains drawn and doors secured. 111:53 The point where everything finally changed came on a Friday evening. 111:57 Richard arrived home appearing drunk. At least that was how it looked to those of us watching. 112:03 He began yelling at the Sanders family. Their offense was leaving their porch light on later than he thought they should. 112:10 His voice rang through the cul-de-sac like an alarm. People opened their blinds just enough to see what was happening. Then he slammed the door of his pickup. The noise echoed around the street. 112:22 I could see him reaching and fumbling at his waistband, looking as though he was about to bring out the handgun again. 112:28 Parents immediately pulled their children away from the windows. 112:32 This time, several households contacted the police at once. Dispatch was hit with one urgent request after another. 112:39 When the officers got there, Richard attempted the performance that had worked before. He lowered his voice, folded his arms. 112:47 presented himself as a reasonable homeowner who was simply being misunderstood. 112:52 But something was different this time. From an upstairs window, one neighbor had recorded the entire episode. The video included sound. 113:01 It showed him shouting threats. It showed his hand going toward the weapon. 113:06 There was no need to rely only on conflicting accounts of what had happened. The evidence was right there. 113:12 Confronted with that recording, the officers detained him. For the first time in months, we felt as though the situation had shifted a little in our direction. 113:21 Only a little, but it was more than we had felt before. 113:25 Helen remained in the doorway while they put the cuffs on him. 113:29 Her face had lost its color, but she was oddly motionless. 113:32 After they took Richard away, she finally came out of the house. She had a sweater pulled around her shoulders, although the evening was still warm. 113:41 She hardly spoke. She only murmured a soft thank you to the person standing nearest her. then went indoors again. 113:49 That brief expression seemed to contain everything she had been unable to tell us. 113:53 Nobody tried to make her explain. Nobody pressed her to talk about what had been happening. 113:59 We allowed the quiet to remain, understanding how delicate that moment was. 114:04 Afterward little by little the street began feeling alive again. 114:08 The children returned to riding their bicycles around the circle. 114:12 A few weeks later we organized a small neighborhood cookout. It gave us a way to remind ourselves that the people living there could remain connected even after the fear we'd been through. 114:22 Richard didn't return. 114:24 Eventually we heard that a series of charges had led to him being forced to move. 114:28 Even now though I sometimes sit on my porch and hear a truck engine humming somewhere in the distance. 114:34 And part of me immediately tightens. It brings back how little time it can take for a single person to make an entire neighborhood feel unsafe. 114:43 And how much courage it asks of ordinary people to come together when the threat is waiting just beyond their front doors. 114:54 Story 8 That afternoon has stayed unusually clear in my memory, probably because it began with absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. 115:03 I was 16, home by myself while my parents stayed late at work, passing the hours with school assignments and video games. 115:11 The apartment was still except for the refrigerator humming and the faint sound of the television in the unit below us. 115:17 It seemed like another slow afternoon when nothing worth remembering was going to happen. 115:22 Then someone knocked. I assumed it was a package arriving, or perhaps a friend who had decided to come over without calling first. 115:30 Instead, I opened the door and found the man who lived farther down our hallway. His name was Mark. 115:36 He seemed unsettled, almost perspiring, and he held his jacket tightly against himself as though he had something concealed in it. 115:44 He wanted to borrow my phone. 115:46 His mobile battery was dead, he explained, and he only needed to make a brief call. 115:52 At first, I didn't think there was anything especially strange about the request. He lived in the building. 115:58 I had seen him more times than I could count carrying out garbage or collecting letters from his mailbox. 116:04 He wasn't particularly social, but plenty of people in our apartment building kept to themselves. 116:10 I stepped aside and invited him in, figuring he would be gone again in a minute. 116:15 He moved past me immediately. His eyes flicked toward the living room, almost as if he wanted to check whether anybody else was there. 116:23 I noticed it, but I dismissed it. Maybe asking a neighbor for a favor had made him uncomfortable. 116:29 While he dialed, he kept transferring his weight between his feet and drumming his fingertips against the counter. 116:35 The conversation didn't last long. I barely heard him speak before he ended it. 116:40 Then another knock came. This one was different, louder, more forceful. 116:46 It sounded like somebody urgently striking the door rather than simply asking to be let in. 116:52 For a moment I thought another person from the building might be outside. 116:56 Then a voice destroyed that explanation. 116:58 Police, open the door. 117:01 My chest seemed to draw tight. 117:03 Mark whipped his head toward me. He put the phone back on the counter with a sharp movement and whispered in a rough, urgent voice. Don't tell them I'm here. 117:12 Before I could even understand what he expected me to do, he hurried into my bedroom. He pulled the closet open. 117:19 I remained where I was, stunned, while he forced himself into the space and shut the door from inside. 117:25 My thoughts crashed into one another. 117:28 Why were the police looking for him? Why had he come into our apartment? 117:33 What kind of person had I just invited inside? 117:36 The knocking became more insistent. There was no time to sort any of it out. 117:41 I opened the front door. Two officers stood outside. Their hands were close to their holsters, and their eyes moved past me into the apartment, as though they already had some idea of what was waiting there. 117:53 They entered immediately. 117:55 I remember the weight of their footsteps on our worn carpet. 117:59 One officer was taller than the other with broad shoulders. He asked whether somebody else was there with me. 118:05 My mouth had gone dry. 118:07 Trying desperately to look composed, I could only shake my head. 118:11 They separated almost at once. 118:14 One headed toward the kitchen. The other went directly down the passage leading to my room. 118:19 Then I heard the closet door shake as he pulled it open. 118:23 A shout followed. 118:24 Every hair along the back of my neck rose. Within seconds, Mark was being pulled out of the closet. He fought and swore as the officer dragged him into view. His jacket slid away, exposing scratches along his arm that looked as though he'd been clawing at something earlier. 118:41 The officer forced him against the wall. His partner fastened the handcuffs around his wrists. 118:47 I stood at the bedroom entrance and watched, hardly able to accept that any of it was happening in my room. 118:53 My books were still arranged in their tidy piles on the shelf. The posters were still hanging where I had put them. 119:00 But everything looked unfamiliar with Mark pushed against the wall beside them, snarling like something trapped. 119:07 I couldn't connect the reserved man I had passed in the hallway with the furious person being restrained a few feet away. 119:13 One of the officers remained with me to ask what had happened. 119:17 His manner was serious, but he wasn't cruel about it. He asked how long Mark had been inside, whether I knew him beyond seeing him around the building, whether anything he had said struck me as suspicious. 119:29 I tried to answer clearly, but I kept tripping over my own words. 119:33 The only explanation I could really give was that he had requested a phone, and I had let him come in because I hadn't imagined there was any danger in it. 119:42 The officer nodded and wrote things down. Then he said something that made me feel cold. 119:48 You were fortunate. He's been on the run since this morning. He assaulted somebody two buildings away. 119:55 When they escorted Mark into the corridor, people were already looking out from their apartments. 120:00 Doors stood partly open all along the hallway. Curious faces watched as the officers took him past. 120:07 Standing in our doorway with all those eyes turned toward me, I felt painfully exposed. 120:12 Before leaving, the officers reminded me to keep the door locked. They told me to be careful about who I allowed inside, even when it was someone I believed I recognized. 120:23 Afterward, the apartment became quiet again. 120:26 But it wasn't the easy quiet that had filled it before the first knock. 120:30 Now every small creak made me hesitate. 120:33 Every shadow seemed worth looking at twice. 120:36 That night I couldn't make myself sleep in my bedroom. 120:39 The closet was still partly open. Whenever I looked toward it, all I could picture was Mark folded into that small space, hiding there and waiting. 120:49 By the following day, people at school had already heard. A couple of kids from our building lived nearby and must have noticed the patrol cars. By lunchtime I had become the subject of conversations spoken just quietly enough for me to know they were about me. 121:03 People wanted to know whether I had been frightened. Whether I already knew Mark was dangerous. Whether he had threatened me. 121:11 I repeated the same response. No. 121:14 I hadn't known anything. But inside my own head I kept going back through the smallest details. 121:20 The speed with which he had entered. The way he had looked around the living room. 121:25 It felt as though the signs had been there from the start and I had simply chosen not to recognize them. 121:31 That evening my parents asked me to sit down with them. We talked for a long time. They weren't mad at me, but the worry was obvious in both their faces. 121:41 My mother told me that trusting somebody could put you in danger when you didn't really know them. 121:46 My father kept shaking his head. 121:48 Over and over he said I should never answer the door when I was there alone. They did their best to reassure me, but nothing they said could remove the picture of the officers hauling Mark from my closet. 122:00 His face had been twisted with anger. 122:03 He looked as though he blamed me, as though opening the door for them had made me someone he hated. 122:09 For weeks, walking through our hallway made me feel that somebody was watching. 122:13 Mark was gone. 122:15 I assumed he was being held somewhere. 122:17 Even so, I began studying the other residents in a way I never had before. I wondered what kind of people they were when their apartment doors closed. 122:26 For years I had lived there without giving much thought to the people around us. 122:30 One decision to trust someone I barely knew changed that familiar building into a place where I questioned everyone. 122:37 At night, footsteps passing our door made me stop breathing for a moment. I would listen and wait, wondering whether another knock was coming. 122:45 Years have passed since then. I still lock doors immediately after stepping inside. My friends sometimes laugh and call me paranoid, but they have never stood in their own home knowing a man wanted by the police was hiding inside their closet. 122:59 They have never watched officers rush through their apartment to pull them out. That afternoon taught me how little time it takes for an ordinary day to become frightening, and how easily the feeling that you are safe can fall apart. 123:12 Even now, opening that closet brings it back, the scrape of its hinges, and everything that happened afterward. 123:25 Story 9. 123:26 That evening, the apartment was so still that I could make out the refrigerator humming from the other side of the room. 123:33 I rented a simple one-bedroom place. Nothing impressive, just the sort of apartment you choose when putting money aside matters more than showing anyone how well you're doing. 123:43 My routine rarely changed. Work, then the gym, then something to eat. 123:49 Afterward, I would read or watch television without paying much attention until I felt sleepy enough to go to bed. 123:55 Nothing remarkable ever seemed to happen in that building. That was one of the reasons I had wanted to live there. The walls weren't thick, but you get accustomed to that in an apartment like mine. 124:07 A few footsteps overhead, a conversation drifting in from another unit, somebody moving around on the other side of a wall. 124:15 Most of it faded into the background. 124:17 In a strange way, hearing those ordinary signs of other people living their lives could even be reassuring. 124:23 The first bout of banging came while I was watching a rerun late at night. 124:28 I was about halfway through the show when the sound struck the wall separating my apartment from the one beside it. 124:34 The impacts were sharp and irregular. It sounded as though somebody was driving something heavy into the plaster. 124:41 At first, I assumed a person next door was struggling to move furniture, or perhaps they had decided to hang something on the wall at an hour when they really should have left it alone. 124:51 I switched off the television sound and listened. 124:54 Then the noise stopped. 124:56 I let it go. 124:58 If you start questioning every sound in a building like that, you'll eventually make yourself miserable. 125:03 The days passed, then the weeks. 125:06 I had almost forgotten about that first evening when the landlord said something that brought it back. 125:11 We happened to meet near the mailboxes. In passing he mentioned that residents had complained about domestic disturbances in the apartment next to mine. 125:20 He sounded dismissive, as though he were repeating an unpleasant rumor he had no interest in getting involved with. 125:27 But after we went our separate ways, I kept thinking about what he had said. I hadn't heard people shouting. 125:34 Nothing that clearly sounded like an argument. 125:37 Only those occasional heavy blows against the wall, which I hadn't been able to explain with any certainty. 125:44 Then the banging returned. This time it was stronger, more persistent. 125:49 I was in bed just beginning to fall asleep when the shared wall shook hard enough to leave a picture frame hanging crooked. 125:56 There was no steady pattern, only frantic impacts with another sound mixed beneath them. 126:02 Something quiet and muffled. 126:04 At first I couldn't work out what it was. I sat upright and listened harder, trying to distinguish one noise from the other. 126:12 Then I understood. This wasn't somebody shifting a couch. It wasn't ordinary carelessness. Someone was crying. 126:20 The sound was restrained, almost smothered by the wall, but unmistakable once I recognized it. 126:26 It traveled through the plaster like something I wasn't supposed to hear. 126:31 I remained awake for hours. 126:33 I stared toward that wall as though looking long enough might somehow make it explain what was happening. 126:38 Every so often the pounding resumed. Then the crying followed. 126:43 Each time I heard it, a cold feeling moved through me. I tried telling myself it might only be an argument. Maybe somebody was striking the wall because they were angry. 126:53 But that explanation didn't sit comfortably with the sounds. There was something desperate about them. They went on too long. They had the quality of someone needing help without being able to openly ask for it. 127:05 After that, sleeping became difficult. Even when everything was quiet, I found myself waiting and listening. 127:12 During daylight hours, though, the building seemed entirely ordinary. 127:16 I passed people in the hallway. We nodded or said a quick hello. 127:21 Nothing in those small encounters suggested that anything was wrong. 127:25 The man in the neighboring apartment was somebody I hardly ever saw. 127:29 At least he was the person I assumed was connected to what I'd been hearing. 127:33 He looked to be around his mid-thirties and was usually a little untidy. He kept his eyes lowered and avoided looking directly at other people. 127:41 Sometimes I saw him bringing home food and reusable shopping bags. 127:46 Occasionally he smoked out on the balcony. 127:49 He had never seemed particularly menacing, but once I began thinking those cries were coming from the place he lived, I watched him more closely whenever we crossed paths. 128:00 On a Friday evening, the noise became worse again. A few friends had come over. We ordered pizza and put on a movie. 128:07 Halfway through it, the banging started. My friends looked at one another. 128:12 What the hell is that? one of them whispered. 128:15 I attempted to make light of it. I said something about the walls being thin and some people not knowing how to control their tempers. 128:23 But nobody in the room seemed relaxed after that. 128:26 The pounding wouldn't let up. 128:28 It echoed as though fists were repeatedly striking drywall. 128:32 Then one of my friends said, almost under their breath, that it sounded more like somebody trying to get out than someone trying to get in. 128:39 That observation stayed with me. I couldn't put it aside. 128:43 After that night, pretending there was nothing to worry about stopped being possible. 128:48 I would pause beside the wall and turn my ear toward even the smallest sound. 128:53 I kept trying to assemble an explanation from whatever fragments reached me. 128:57 On some nights there was nothing. 129:00 The quiet felt so complete that I wondered whether anyone was home. 129:04 On others, the blows came back hard enough to make the shelves tremble. The crying grew louder, then softer. 129:11 Then, without warning, it stopped. 129:13 I would lie there in the darkness, wondering what I was supposed to do. 129:17 Go next door and knock. Phone somebody. 129:20 Tell myself it wasn't my business. 129:23 That struggle between being afraid and feeling responsible became something I went through almost every night. 129:29 Eventually, there was an evening when the sounds became too severe to dismiss. 129:34 It was nearly midnight. 129:36 I was reading in bed when a violent impact shook the wall. Dust sifted down from the ceiling. 129:42 The crying was more distinct than I had ever heard it. 129:45 I still couldn't understand any actual words. 129:48 But it sounded like pleading. 129:50 I reached for my phone. My thumb remained above the numbers for 911. 129:55 I couldn't make myself press them. 129:58 Fear had worked its way into every possibility I considered. 130:02 What if I had misunderstood? 130:04 What if I brought myself into a private situation that had nothing to do with me? 130:09 My heartbeat thudded in my ears. I sat there, unable to decide between making the call and continuing to do nothing. 130:16 Then everything went silent. The sounds didn't slowly die down. 130:21 They simply ended. It was as abrupt as a switch being turned off. 130:26 The following morning I noticed the blinds next door. 130:29 Normally they were partly open, with the weak light of a lamp visible behind them. 130:34 Now they were pulled completely closed. 130:36 Later, when I left for work, something else caught my attention. 130:40 The welcome mat had disappeared from outside his door. So had the potted plant that had always stood beside it. 130:47 The little space outside the apartment looked bare, almost as though nobody had ever occupied it. 130:54 I asked the landlord what had happened. He said the tenant had left during the night. 130:59 There hadn't been any notice. 131:01 No explanation beforehand. The man had simply gone. 131:05 From the way the landlord answered, I knew he didn't want any more questions. What disturbed me wasn't only that my neighbor had disappeared. 131:13 It was the complete and sudden end of the noise. 131:16 For weeks those blows and those muffled cries had filled parts of my nights. They had become something I couldn't avoid thinking about. 131:24 Then one night passed and they were gone. Nothing remained to explain them. 131:29 I began questioning my own memory. 131:32 Perhaps I had interpreted the sounds incorrectly. 131:35 Perhaps after hearing the landlord's comment, I had made them seem worse in my head. 131:40 But the picture frame had really shifted. 131:43 My shelves had really shaken. 131:45 My friends had heard the banging themselves. 131:48 I hadn't imagined those things. something had been happening on the other side of that wall and it stopped at the same time the man vanished even now whenever i pass the apartment i catch myself looking at its plain empty doorway part of me expects to hear a faint impact again the sound of knuckles hitting plaster nobody new has moved in as far as i can tell the unit has remained unoccupied Sometimes late at night I realize I'm sitting without breathing, listening for that stillness to be interrupted. 132:21 It never is, but the silence hasn't taken the memory of the crying away.
