The wavering light gave the apartment a golden uneven glow. 02:12 I waited and then I heard a knock but not at the front door. 02:15 It came from the back, from the kitchen door that opens to the fenced alley. 02:20 No one ever used that door. 02:23 I had not even opened it in weeks, and the gate beyond it was always latched. 02:28 The knock came again. 02:30 Three firm, spaced out knocks. 02:33 Not frantic, not shy, but unsettling. 02:37 I stood still, candle in hand, staring toward the kitchen. 02:41 My first thought was that maybe some neighbor had gotten confused, but no one should have been back there, especially not in a storm like that. 02:50 My landlord always used the front path. Then he raised a hand and motioned to me as if to say, come here. 03:45 I did not move. 03:47 I stayed where I was behind the table. 03:50 He spoke through the glass. 03:52 Sorry to bother you. My car broke down just at the end of the alley. 03:56 I only need to use your phone for a second. 04:00 Even through the thick glass, his voice sounded gentle, too friendly, too relaxed, like someone asking for a cup of sugar. 04:08 It did not fit the situation. 04:11 I shook my head. 04:13 I'm sorry, I can't help you. 04:15 He tilted his head slightly, as though puzzled, as if he did not understand. 04:20 Then he smiled again and said my name. 04:23 Mara, please. It'll only take a second. 04:27 He did not ask. 04:29 He said it clearly and softly as if we already knew each other. 04:34 My heart started pounding in my chest. 04:36 I had not introduced myself. I had not said anything except refuse. 04:41 I did not have any nameplate anywhere. 04:44 How did he know? 04:46 He knocked again with one knuckle very gently against the glass. 04:51 come on don't be rude your phone is right there i backed away holding the candle out in front of me as if it could protect me i did not say another word i turned around walked to the bathroom and locked the door i sat on the edge of the tub trying to calm my hands enough to unlock my phone the power was still out and i had no signal either the storm must have knocked out the nearest tower or maybe the mountains were blocking a reception I tried calling 911 anyway. 05:23 Nothing. 05:24 I stayed there in the dark, me and the candle alone in that silence, feeling completely cut off from the world. 05:32 A few minutes dragged by, then something moved. 05:36 A low dull thud from the living room, like someone stepping too hard on an old floorboard. 05:42 I strained to listen over the rain, which was now lashing the roof. 05:47 Another sound, closer this time. A soft scrape like something brushing against the hallway wall. 05:53 I covered my mouth with my hand and stayed perfectly still. 05:57 I could feel the air tightening around me, as if the space itself were shrinking. 06:03 I kept staring at the door, afraid it would open. 06:06 The phone still had no service. The glow of the screen felt like it was mocking me. 06:12 Finally, the electricity flickered back on. The bathroom light came on, blinding me for a second. 06:19 I blinked and checked my phone. 06:21 Two bars. 06:23 I called the police and lowered my voice. 06:25 The dispatcher listened, took my address and said someone was on the way. 06:30 she asked if i felt safe staying on the line i said no i was afraid of making noise she told me to stay where i was and keep the door locked it took the officer 52 minutes to arrive when he knocked this time at the front door i asked for his badge number and name before i even unlatched it he came in looked around with a flashlight and went to the back. 06:55 The man was gone, but there was evidence. Muddy footprints leading away from the back door and disappearing into the tree line. 07:02 There were no tire tracks, no second set of footprints, only his. 07:07 I told the officer everything. 07:10 He wrote up a report and said they would add extra patrols in the area for a few days. 07:15 But he did not seem surprised. 07:17 He looked at me and said, We get more reports like this than you'd imagine. 07:22 Criminals who wait for storms to cover the sound of forcing entry. 07:27 That did not comfort me. 07:29 A month later I moved out. I found a new place on the other side of town. Somewhere with street lights, neighbors, no back door. 07:38 Whenever it rains my mind goes straight back to that night. 07:42 Especially when it comes down hard when it drowns out every other sound. 07:46 And I still go cold whenever I hear a knock at the door. 07:55 Story 2 It was August 2021, and I was three days into a solo road trip up the Pacific coast. 08:04 I had just graduated from college and wanted one last aimless adventure before the weight of real life came crashing down on me. 08:11 I did not have a strict itinerary, just a duffel bag, some gear, and the vague idea of stopping at every weird roadside attraction between San Diego and Oregon. 08:23 I was sleeping in cheap motels, crashing at campgrounds, eating gas station burritos and pretending I did not have emails about student loans piling up back home. 08:34 That night I was near Eureka, California. 08:37 The rain started in bursts and then turned into a full downpour just after sunset. 08:42 The roads were slick, visibility was terrible, and the windshield wipers sounded like they were protesting with every pass. 08:50 I had gone miles without seeing another car. 08:53 A couple of side roads were already flooded and I was starting to get uneasy about continuing farther north. 09:00 I remember gripping the steering wheel every time I passed a stretch without guard rails. 09:05 The cliffs around there do not give second chances. 09:08 I pulled into a tiny gas station just outside of town to check my GPS. 09:14 But even with full signal, every route ahead looked risky. 09:18 My tank was below a quarter and I was exhausted. 09:22 So when I saw the fluorescent sign of an old motel flickering up the road, blue and pink lights visible through the storm, I took it as a sign. 09:31 The place looked like something out of a movie. Not the good kind. 09:36 A one-story L-shaped building, maybe ten rooms total. 09:40 Paint peeling from the trim, a few dark windows. 09:44 One had a patch of cardboard over it. There was a vending machine under the overhang, and the vacancy sign lit up just as I pulled into the parking lot. 09:53 I figured it was better than trying to drive flooded roads in the middle of the night. 09:58 At that point, all I wanted was a hot shower, a dry bed, and to forget rain existed. 10:05 The lobby looked frozen in the 1980s. There was a bell on the counter, a TV full of static in the corner. and the stale smell of wet carpet mixed with lemon cleaner. 10:16 A plastic ficus drooped beside the window. A map of Humboldt County hung crooked on the wall. 10:23 A man came out from the back when I rang the bell, late fifties maybe. Gray ponytail, blue windbreaker two sizes too big for him. 10:31 He gave me a smile that looked more tired than friendly. His name tag just said Cliff. 10:38 Rough night to be out on the road, he said. 10:41 Yeah, I wanted to keep going, but it felt safer to stop. 10:45 Do you have any rooms? 10:47 He nodded slowly. 10:49 Only had one guest earlier, but he left before the storm started. 10:53 You're the only one here now. 10:56 I paid in cash. He handed me a brass key with a huge green tag. 11:01 Room 6, end of the building, he said. 11:05 Wi-Fi is spotty, but there's heat and clean towels. 11:09 Yell if you need anything. 11:11 I thanked him and jogged back to the car. 11:14 My shoes were soaked instantly. The rain was coming down even harder. 11:19 The wind shoved at me and I had to shield my eyes with my forearm just to make out the line of rooms. 11:25 The light above room 6 buzzed and flickered like a dying bug zapper. 11:30 I slid the key in and pushed the door open. 11:33 There was someone inside sitting on the edge of the bed. 11:37 I did not get a good look, just a silhouette in the dark, slightly hunched, hands resting on their knees. 11:44 The room smelled damp, moldy, and like something else. 11:47 There was a strange tension in the air, like I had walked into a place where something bad had just happened. 11:54 Instinctively, I stepped back, every muscle in my body tightened. 11:58 I said, sorry, I think there's been a mistake. 12:02 The figure did not move, not even the slightest flinch. 12:06 I backed out and shut the door, my hand shaking as I locked it from the outside. 12:12 Then I walked fast, almost ran back to the office, my heart pounding and my eyes jumping to the dark windows as I passed them. 12:20 The manager was still there, sipping coffee from a styrofoam cup and swiping at a phone that looked at least a decade older than mine. 12:29 There's someone in my room, I said trying to stay calm. 12:32 They're sitting on the bed. You said I was the only guest. 12:37 He frowned, set down the cup. 12:40 Six. 12:42 Yeah. 12:43 He came out from behind the counter and grabbed a flashlight. 12:47 Come on. 12:48 We walked back together. The rain hammered the roof. 12:53 I stayed one step behind while he opened the door again and pushed it wide open. 12:57 The room was empty. 12:59 Not just empty. Spotless. 13:02 The bedspread was smooth. The light was on. 13:06 The air smelled like cleaner and stale air. 13:09 No wet footprints. No sheets with impressions. 13:13 No sign at all that anyone had been there. 13:16 I stood there trying to figure out if I had lost my mind. 13:20 Did I imagine it? 13:22 Did I go to the wrong room the first time? 13:25 The manager looked at me. 13:27 You okay, son? 13:29 Yeah, it's just... I swear there was someone sitting on the bed. 13:34 I saw them. 13:35 You've been driving in this rain for a while, right? 13:38 Light plays tricks sometimes. 13:41 People get turned around. 13:43 I did not argue. I felt stupid. 13:47 He left me the flashlight and said I could switch rooms if I wanted, but the others had not been cleaned yet. 13:53 I told him I would be fine and locked the door behind him. 13:57 The heater kicked on with a groan. 14:00 I sat down, not on the bed, but at the little table by the window, facing the door. 14:06 I kept the TV on low just to have background noise. I scanned every corner of that space before I let myself blink for more than a second. 14:15 The curtain shifted slightly in the draft, and I swear at one point I saw a faint reflection in the television that was not mine. 14:22 I barely slept. 14:24 Around 2 a.m. I thought I heard footsteps on the walkway. Just a few, then nothing. 14:30 I looked out the window, but I did not see anyone. 14:34 I assumed it was the wind, or maybe Cliff checking on something, though I never heard a door open. 14:41 By morning, the rain had stopped. The parking lot gleamed with puddles. 14:46 I dropped off the key and thanked the manager, who was still behind the counter as if he had never moved. 14:52 Sleep okay? 14:54 Yeah, I said. 14:56 Thanks. 14:57 As I turned to leave, he added, You sure you didn't dream it? 15:02 The person in the room, I mean. 15:04 You're not the first one to mention it. 15:07 I stopped. 15:08 He shrugged. 15:10 Sometimes people think they see someone in there. 15:13 Always that same room, but never when I go check. 15:17 I did not answer. 15:18 I just nodded and left. 15:21 As I drove out of town, I kept checking the rearview mirror. 15:24 I do not know what I expected. 15:27 Maybe someone sitting in the back seat. Maybe that figure again, standing on the side of the road. 15:34 Something that would make sense of any of it. 15:37 But I saw nothing. 15:39 To this day, I still do not know what I came across that night, or who else might have been using that room. 15:50 Story 3. 15:52 I teach night classes at the community college in Laramie. I usually leave at 9.30 and get home by 10 o'clock. 15:59 Maybe later if I stay to help a student. 16:02 That night in late September 2021, I stayed later than usual, grading papers, reorganizing a lesson plan, and catching up on emails I had ignored all week. 16:14 By the time I finally packed everything up and got to my car, It was almost 11 p.m., and the storm that had been threatening all afternoon had finally broken. 16:25 It was not the kind of drizzle you can ignore. It was one of those Wyoming storms that hit hard and suddenly. 16:32 Sheets of rain hammering the windshield, thunder rumbling close enough to shake the glass, gusts shoving my little car side to side even while I crawled along. 16:42 Visibility was awful. 16:44 The streetlights cast blurry halos distorted by the downpour. 16:49 Every time the wipers cleared the windshield, it felt like it filled right back up with water. 16:54 I should have taken the main highway. It is better lit and less likely to flood. 17:00 But I thought I would save time by cutting through one of the old roads, a narrow two-lane route that winds between abandoned farmland and prairie. 17:09 In daylight it is quiet and even pretty. 17:12 At night, and especially in a storm like that, it felt endless. 17:17 I kept my speed low, both hands tight on the wheel, hyper aware of every sound and shadow. 17:23 No other cars, no houses with lights on, just fence posts, swaying grass and stretches of dark muddy road. 17:31 I had the GPS on. 17:34 I did not really need it, but it was the kind of night when even familiar routes feel strange. 17:40 Then out of nowhere I saw a shape. For a second I thought it was a trick of the rain. Something about the way the headlights were refracting. Maybe a branch blown into the road. But as I got closer I saw clearly. 17:55 A man was standing right in the middle of the road. He was not walking, not waving for help, just standing there. 18:03 He was wearing a hooded jacket with the hood up, jeans soaked all the way through. 18:08 His head was tilted slightly forward like he was looking at the ground or maybe watching it. 18:13 His hands hung at his sides, no backpack, no flashlight, no car nearby. 18:19 He did not look injured, but he did not look right either. 18:24 I eased my foot onto the brake. I did not want to slam on it and skid, but I had to stop. 18:30 The tires hissed as I slowed down. 18:33 I came to a stop maybe 30 or 40 feet away from him. 18:37 My headlights hit him full on, but he did not even blink. 18:40 I waited five seconds. 18:42 Ten. 18:44 He did not move. Not a twitch. 18:47 I thought about rolling down the window to yell something at him, but something stopped me. 18:52 Everything felt wrong, out of place. 18:56 My instincts were screaming at me not to interact, not to speak. 19:00 I put the car in reverse and started backing up slowly. 19:04 I was planning to turn around and take the long way to the highway. 19:08 There was no real shoulder, just soft dirt turned to mud. 19:13 One bad move and I would end up stuck in a ditch. 19:16 Even so, I kept my eyes on him. He did not react. He did not try to follow me. 19:23 Nothing. 19:24 When I thought I had enough room to get around him, I put the car back in drive and crept forward again, this time angling a little to the right to pass him. 19:34 I would have had maybe four feet of clearance between the car and the ditch. 19:38 Not ideal, but possible. 19:40 I thought if I went slow I could make it. 19:43 That was when he moved. He did not step, did not lunge. It was like suddenly he was in the air. 19:51 One second he was standing there, and the next he was crashing onto the hood of my car with both hands. 19:58 His face hit the windshield. 20:00 I saw his eyes wide open, empty, hollow, like there was no one behind them. 20:06 He started pounding hard, one fist then the other, over and over. 20:11 No screaming, no words, just that dull rhythmic thudding against the glass. 20:17 His hood had slipped back a little, and I could see thinning hair, pale skin, maybe late 30s or early 40s. 20:25 But his expression never changed, not once. 20:29 He did not seem to care that he was soaked to the bone or putting himself in danger. 20:34 I laid on the horn. 20:36 It did nothing. 20:38 The wipers were slapping against his arms and shoulders. 20:42 I think I screamed something. Probably a string of curses, but it did not matter. 20:48 I hit the gas. The car lurched forward. He slid off the hood almost immediately and slammed onto the wet pavement with a heavy sound. 20:57 I did not stay to see what happened next. I just drove. 21:01 Fast enough that the tires hydroplaned once or twice. My hands were shaking, but I kept them locked on the wheel. 21:09 It took another ten minutes to reach the gas station on the edge of town. 21:14 By then the rain had let up, but I was drenched in sweat, still gripping the wheel like it was the only thing keeping me safe. 21:21 My phone was dead, so I asked the clerk if I could use theirs to call the police. 21:27 He handed it over without too many questions, just watching me with a strange look of concern, like he thought I might pass out or start crying. 21:36 A patrol car showed up about half an hour later. Two officers got out. 21:41 I explained what happened, and one stayed with me while the other went to check the road. 21:46 About twenty minutes later, he came back shaking his head. 21:50 There was no sign of anyone, no blood, not even a mark in the mud where I swore the man had fallen. 21:57 They checked the hood and windshield, and sure enough the hood was dented exactly where the man had landed. 22:03 Are you sure it wasn't an animal? Maybe a large deer? 22:07 I wanted to get angry, but I understood the question. 22:11 It was a man, I said. 22:13 I saw his face. 22:15 They exchanged a look I could not read, said they would file a report anyway, and gave me a card in case I remembered anything else. 22:24 That night I drove home the long way, took the highway, and stayed at the speed limit the whole time. 22:30 I did not tell many people about it. A few friends, my sister. 22:35 Most of them thought I must have been exhausted or overwhelmed from work. 22:39 But I know what I saw, and I do not take that road anymore. Not even during the day. 22:50 Story 4 I have been a ranger with the Kentucky Division of Forestry for almost nine years. 22:58 When you spend that much time in the woods, you learn what belongs there and what does not. 23:04 Broken branches, scattered trash, fire pit remains, all of it tells stories. 23:10 The ground lets you know when something is off even before your brain fully processes it. 23:16 That happened to me last October, after a week of heavy rain and strong winds in eastern Kentucky. 23:23 We had gotten reports of a small mudslide near Trillium Ridge, just north of the state line. 23:28 Nothing major, just enough to block part of a horse trail and shift some of the undergrowth. 23:34 I was assigned to check it out. 23:37 I drove there alone, like I always do. 23:40 The weather had eased up, but the sky still looked ugly, low clouds hanging heavy like they were ready for a second round. 23:48 Fog clung to the treetops, and everything smelled like wet leaves and disturbed earth. 23:53 That thick kind of air you feel when you breathe, as if the forest has not finished letting go of you. 24:00 The access road was a mess, full of ruts and puddles. 24:05 I parked by the trailhead at around 4.45pm, just before it started getting dark. 24:11 I had a flashlight, a radio, and enough common sense not to linger. 24:16 The plan was to mark the slide, take a few pictures, and get back to the truck before the fog really rolled in. 24:23 I had barely taken a few steps when I heard it. 24:26 A baby crying. 24:28 It stopped me cold. 24:30 It was not a full-on wail, more like a strange quiet cry, distant but unmistakable. 24:37 At first I thought maybe it was an echo through the trees, but it sounded too clear, too human. 24:45 It was coming from off the trail, deeper in the woods. 24:48 I reported it over the radio, told dispatch I was checking on a possible lost hiker or a child, and headed toward the sound. 24:57 I was not about to ignore something like that, even though it made no sense. 25:02 This was not a park with campsites nearby. 25:05 No one should have been out there, especially not with a baby. 25:09 I moved slowly, sweeping my flashlight from side to side. The rain had softened the ground and it was hard to hear anything besides the squish of my boots and the dripping from the canopy. 25:20 The crying continued, always just a little farther ahead. It did not sound desperate, just steady, like it was waiting. 25:29 At one point I stopped and shouted, asking if anyone needed help. Nothing answered except the tapping of droplets against the leaves. 25:37 I kept going. 25:39 Then it stopped all at once. 25:41 It did not fade out or trail off. It was like someone had hit mute. 25:46 I stood there listening, waiting. 25:49 Nothing. 25:51 No crying. No wind. 25:53 Just that muffled hum of dampness everywhere. 25:57 That was when I saw it. A piece of fabric caught on a low branch. Pale blue. It looked like part of a baby blanket. 26:06 The kind of cheap fleece blanket you find in a dollar store. 26:10 I stepped closer. 26:12 It fell apart the moment I touched it, crumbling between my fingers like it had been there for years. 26:18 The color was sun-faded. The edges were rotten. 26:22 That made no sense. It was supposed to have just fallen there. 26:27 I looked around and realized I had gone much farther in than I thought. 26:31 I marked my coordinates on the GPS and turned around. The walk back was slower. 26:37 Visibility had gotten worse, and my boots kept sinking into the soft ground. 26:43 I looked over my shoulder again and again, not because I thought someone was following me, but because everything was too quiet, too strange. 26:52 Like I had crossed into a place I was not supposed to be. 26:56 When I got back to the trailhead, I saw it immediately. 27:00 My truck had been moved. 27:02 Only a few feet, but enough that I could tell. 27:05 I had left it facing downhill, front end pointed toward the trail, like I always do. 27:11 Now it was crooked, turned slightly toward the woods. 27:15 My first thought was that the mud underneath had shifted. That would not have been the first time. 27:20 But then I saw the footprints. 27:23 They were not mine. Bigger, heavier. 27:26 They circled the driver's side and stopped at the tailgate. There were two sets now. 27:31 One was recent, the other was old, so faded that you could barely make out the tread pattern. The mud was so churned up that there was no way to tell where they came from or where they went. 27:44 But they definitely had not been there when I parked. 27:47 I circled the vehicle, sweeping the tree line with my flashlight. 27:51 I could not shake the feeling that someone had been watching me. 27:55 Maybe they still were. 27:57 Every part of me was telling me to leave, get into the cab. and put as much distance as possible between me and that place. 28:05 I radioed in again, said I was returning to base and would file a full report. 28:11 I did not stay to investigate. Whatever that was, I did not want to meet it in the dark. 28:17 Back at the station, I pulled the footage from the trail camera for that afternoon. 28:21 There is one mounted just above the road entrance, pointed directly at the spot where I parked. I expected to see myself arrive, get out, and head into the woods. 28:32 Instead, there was nothing. 28:35 The recording came up completely black. 28:38 I logged everything in the report, submitted it the way I was supposed to, and left out a couple of details I did not know how to explain. 28:47 No one ever followed up. 28:49 I cannot stop thinking about it. 28:51 The way the crying stopped the moment I got close. The footprints in the mud. 28:57 Like something out there was luring me in. 29:00 And I almost took the bait. 29:07 Story five. 29:09 Lately, my house has been a bit of a mess. 29:12 My girlfriend got hurt pretty badly during a horseback riding class, fell off the horse, and ended up with a concussion. 29:19 While she recovers, I have basically become a full-time dog dad. 29:24 We have three. And yes, they are adorable. 29:27 But if they do not get walked, they turn into absolute gremlins. 29:32 One afternoon around 7.30, I had just finished making dinner when I realized the dogs were giving me that look of... Either you take us out or deal with the consequences. 29:42 Normally we walk them together, but she was not feeling up to it, so I leashed them up and decided to do it on my own. 29:50 We live in a pretty quiet college town, close to campus. It is the kind of place where you see people jogging alone at night and do not think twice about it. 30:00 Around our area there is a very long stretch of parks and trails. 30:04 People here call it the Green Line. 30:07 It is one continuous path that cuts across the north side of town, lined with trees and benches, and it is always full of runners, cyclists, dog walkers and retirees doing the weirdest Tai Chi routines. 30:20 There is a park right behind our building, and we usually go there.
